Volleyball Falls In Green & White Classic Opener

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Central Michigan volleyball team opened the Michigan State Green & White Classic on Friday with a tough five-set loss to Oakland at the Spartans' Jenison Field House.
The Chippewas (5-5) are scheduled to play two matches on Saturday in the tournament. They are slated to play IUPUI (2-7) at 3 p.m. and then take on the host Spartans (4-2) at 7 p.m.
Oakland outlasted CMU in a nip-and-tuck fifth set, 15-13, to claim Friday's match. CMU won the first and fourth sets, 25-22 and 25-14; Oakland took sets two and three, 25-21 and 25-23.
Savannah Thompson led the Chippewas with 12 kills, while Sierra Gray and Krystina Kasson added 11 apiece. The 11 kills were a career best for Kasson, a freshman who hit .346 in the match.
CMU's Lisbeth Rosario-Martinez had 10 kills on a team-high .391 attack percentage. She also led the Chippewas with six blocks.
Kamryn Olson and Kendall Braate finished with 26 and 23 assists, respectively, for the Chippewas, while Aly Gurtiza paced CMU with 25 digs.
Oakland is 6-3.
