CMU holds on to even MAC mark at 1-1
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- A historic day for Central Michigan field hockey on Friday as the Chippewas knocked off No. 23-ranked Kent State, 1-0, at Cristy Freese Field.
Â
CMU moves to 2-6, 1-1 in the Mid-American Conference. Kent State, 5-2, 1-1, had topped three ranked teams – No. 22 Ohio State, No. 14 Syracuse, and No. 25 Maine – earlier this season.
Â
The win snapped a seven-game losing streak to Kent State. CMU last beat the Golden Flashes on Nov. 1, 2014.
Â
It was the first win over Kent State for fourth-year CMU coach Catherine Ostoich.
Â
"This win finally proves to our girls that we can hang with anybody, we can compete with anybody," Ostoich said. "It is a lot easier to stay in the fight for the MAC being 1-1 than it is being 0-2, so this win just keeps us in the fight. This win gives us that confidence and belief that we know what we have to do now and moving forward we need to do it in every game."
Â
Freshmen Kaitlyn Bowker scored the game's lone goal in the second quarter. Rachel Ruttenberg was credited with an assist.
Â
CMU goalkeeper Katie Maxim, a sophomore, recorded nine saves in posting her first shutout of the season and the second of her career.
Â
The Golden Flashes outshot the Chippewas, 26-11, including a 9-7 edge in shots on goal. Kent State had 14 penalty corners to CMU's four. Kent State put the pressure on in the fourth quarter, outshooting the Chippewas 8-1 and collecting three corners to none for CMU.
Â
The Chippewas turned the tables in winning a one-goal game after losing their first four one-goal games of the season.
Â
"I am just so proud of the girls," Ostoich said. "We have lost those four games by one because we didn't choose to play until we were in tight situations. We did not do that today."
Â
CMU will travel to Farmville, Va. to face Longwood in a MAC game on Friday Oct. 1 (noon).
