BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Central Michigan gymnasts won every event on Friday and the Chippewas posted a season-best team score in winning a Mid-American Conference meet at Bowling Green's Anderson Arena.
The Chippewas finished with a 193.950 team total for their first win of the season. CMU is scheduled to compete in a tri-meet with Illinois State at Ball State on Sunday, Jan. 30 (1 p.m.).
The win lifted the Chippewas to 1-2, 1-1 MAC, as they scored nearly a point higher than they did a week ago in dropping a meet at Eastern Michigan.
"Overall, we did what we said we were going to do," CMU coach Christine MacDonald said. "We went back to the gym and worked hard this week.
"We still have some things we have to work through, but I think we had a great team atmosphere. Our team really stepped up. We were able to use some different individuals in different lineup spots and that's great to see them really maturing and growing into those roles."
Hannah DeMers, the reigning MAC Gymnast of the Week, won the uneven parallel bars and shared first place on vault with teammate Katie Kowalski.
DeMers and Kowalski posted a 9.850 on vault. Both scores were their season best in the event. DeMer's 9.900 score on bars was also a season high.
The Chippewas' Adriana Bustelo and Quinn Skrupa shared first place on the balance beam and CMU's Ashley Veglucci won the floor exercise.
The 9.825 on beam was Bustelo's season best and it marked the first time this year that Skrupa has competed in the event. Veglucci posted a 9.825 score on floor.
The Chippewas won vault, bars and beam. Their 48.875 on vault and 48.800 on bars were season bests, which are "a great steppingstone to move forward with," MacDonald said.
The Chippewas' bar score was a significant improvement from the 48.175 they posted last week at Eastern Michigan, and it came in the first rotation and helped propel them throughout the rest of the meet.
DeMers led a CMU sweep of the top-four spots on bars. Brenna Hauser (9.775) was second, while Bustelo and Audriana Hammond (9.750) tied for third.
"I think for our bars to start off the day and rebound from last weekend was really key," MacDonald said, adding that "Brenna Hauser had a really solid routine for us and it's good to see her really showcase her gymnastics that she shows us every day."
MacDonald lauded the beam performances of Bustelo, a sophomore, and Skrupa, a freshman.
"On balance beam Quinn stepped into the lineup and did a great job in finishing tied for first with Adriana," MacDonald said. "They both had nice routines. It was nice to see the underclassmen stepping into some important roles."
CMU's Elizabeth Buttle finished tied for fourth with teammate Aleysia Kolyvanova behind Veglucci on floor.
"Elizabeth Buttle, she's really been working hard to get into a consistent lineup spot, and it was really nice to see her step up and have a great performance," MacDonald said.
