MUNCIE, Ind. – A strong finish, three team season highs, and a lot of bright spots for the Central Michigan gymnastics team.
The Chippewas posted a season-best 194.650 team score in finishing second in a nonconference tri-meet on Sunday at Ball State. The host Cardinals were first with 195.850; Illinois State was third with 194.525.
CMU posted season-best scores on floor exercise (49.250) and on vault (48.925) in the third and fourth rotation, respectively. The Chippewas opened with a 47.700 on uneven parallel bars and then posted a 48.775 score on balance beam.
"We put ourselves in a position where we had to fight back and we did that," CMU coach Christine MacDonald said. "I thought they did a great job of building on one event after another and finishing strong. To have our season highs on both floor and then vault shows great fortitude and really good focus with this team.
"We did not have a fall in the last three events. The work they're putting in in the gym is starting to show; especially proud of our floor team and our vault team. Those are definitely two big scores for those groups."
CMU junior Ashley Veglucci tied for first on floor with a 9.875, which tied her season best in the event.
The Chippewas' Hannah DeMers finished second on bars (9.775), tied for second on balance beam (9.850), and won the all-around with a 39.275 total. She tied for third on floor (9.850) and tied for sixth on vault (9.800).
"Right now, Hannah has the highest all-around score in the MAC," MacDonald said. "She's definitely solidifying her position as that all-arounder."
CMU's 49.250 on floor ties for the highest by a MAC team this season and is just outside the top 10 nationally.
CMU's Taylor Pitchell and Sierra DeMarinis tied for third, along with DeMers, in the event at 9.850, giving the Chippewas four of the top six on floor in the meet.
"It's time on task and confidence as we continue to build week in and week out," MacDonald said. "Seeing the work that we put in in the gym show up on meet days feeds that confidence and gives us that competitive edge. The shining moments come out on meet days."
Katie Kowalski (9.850) was CMU's top finisher, third, on vault.
The Chippewas (1-3) are scheduled to compete in a nonconference squad with Illinois and Georgia at Kentucky on Friday, Feb. 4.
"It's a short turnaround this week and there's lots of work ahead of us, but we definitely have a lot to build off of," MacDonald said.
