Wrestling Knocks Off No. 24 South Dakota State, Runs Dual Win Streak To 7

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Two different routes to victory to two Sunday wins to complete a perfect weekend for the Central Michigan wrestling team.
Brock Bergelin recorded a pin, Bret Fedewa posted a major upset, and Matt Stencel got the clincher as the Chippewas defeated No. 24 South Dakota State, 21-17, in a nonconference dual on Sunday at SIE Edwardsville's First Community Arena.
The Chippewas opened the day with a 34-3 Mid-American Conference dual victory over the host Cougars. CMU started the weekend with a 33-6 MAC win on Friday at Northern Illinois. The Chippewas, who have won seven consecutive duals, are 8-2, 3-0 MAC.
It marked the second consecutive weekend that CMU has knocked off a ranked opponent in a dual. Last weekend, the Chippewas topped No. 25 Campbell, 19-15, en route to winning the Chippewa Challenge at McGuirk Arena.
The Chippewas dominated the Cougars, dropping just one match and scoring bonus points in four of their nine victories.
The dual with South Dakota State was, as expected, a white knuckler. The Jackrabbits (9-2) came in riding an eight-meet win streak, capped by a 21-12 victory over No. 12 Missouri on Saturday.
"We're pretty happy with the outcome not only with the dual meet, but some of the results of the individual matches were important to us," CMU coach Tom Borrelli said. "That's why we wanted to wrestle (South Dakota State).
"We knew they had ranked kids that if we could figure out how to beat them it might not only bring a (national championship) qualifying spot to the conference but also help our guys get into the rankings. Those things were pretty important today."
Bergelin gave the Chippewas a shot of momentum and a 6-0 lead against the Jackrabbits with a second-period pin in the opening bout at 125 pounds.
CMU then got decision victories from Dresden Simon (141), Corbyn Munson (149), Johnny Lovett (157), and Fedewa (174).
The Jackrabbits recorded pins at 165 and 197 and a decision victory at 184. At that point, CMU led, 18-17, setting the stage for the final match of the meet (285) between the ninth-ranked Stencel and 24th-ranked A.J. Nevills.
Stencel broke a 2-2 tie with a third-period takedown and then a 2-point near fall and went on to post a 6-3 win.
Stencel's match capped a dramatic dual during which the Chippewas had several highlights.
• Simon, who is ranked 13th nationally, posted an 11-5 win over 12th-ranked Clay Carlson, who entered the meet 20-1 on the season.
• Fedewa's 3-1 win came in sudden victory, and it came over 10th-ranked Cade DeVos, who entered the match 20-2 and riding a 13-match win streak. Fedewa took DeVos down out of a scramble for the winning points.
"That was the difference in the dual," Borrelli said. "That's a huge win for him. Bret's been slowly beating guys like that, but he hasn't gotten recognized for it yet. Maybe this'll help."
• Lovett's 8-6 win was a thriller as he trailed 5-2 in the third period and then scored a takedown with under 5 seconds remaining in regulation to tie it, 6-6. He then won with a takedown in sudden victory.
"As long as you're being aggressive, you've got an opportunity," Borrelli said.
Against SIUE, Bergelin and Lovett posted major-decision victories; Stencel had a pin, his eighth of the season; and Vince Perez (133) won by technical fall. It was Perez's first tech fall of the year.
CMU also got decision victories from Simon, Tracy Hubbard (165), Fedewa, and Aaron Bolo (197). The wins for Simon and Bolo came in overtime. Simon's win came over Saul Ervin, who is ranked 31st.
