ALBANY, N.Y. – North Carolina State won the dual meet.
Corbyn Munson provided the biggest highlight.
Munson, a Central Michigan senior, posted a 4-1 upset of North Carolina State's Ed Scott on Friday as the Chippewa wrestling team fell to the ninth-ranked Wolfpack, 26-12, in the Armbar at the Armory, an event organized by Journeymen Wrestling featuring eight teams in four dual meets.
It was a huge win for Munson, who moved up to 157 pounds from 149 this season and is ranked 33rdnationally. Scott is a sophomore and the defending ACC champion who is ranked sixth.
"Corbyn moving up a weight, I don't know that he had the confidence in himself that we thought he should have," CMU coach Tom Borrelli said. "I feel like this match is really going to spearhead him forward."
Munson scored a takedown late in the first period on a counter move after Scott shot on him. He then got a second-period reversal to up his lead to 4-0. Scott got an escape point in the third period, but Munson maintained an aggressive tact to close out the match.
"(Munson) rode really well which kept (Scott) on the mat and kind of negated his offense," Borrelli said. "(Munson) kind of dominated the match."
Five of the Wolfpack's 10 wrestlers came into the dual ranked nationally. Four of those wrestlers won their matches on Friday, scoring bonus points in three of those victories.
The Chippewas' other wins came from Vince Perez (133) and Alex Cramer (174). Perez won by medical forfeit over Jacob Cox.
Cramer, a junior who took an injury redshirt last season, posted a 6-2 win over Joey Milano. Cramer built a 6-0 lead.
"He was trying to get the major at the end of the match and ended up getting taken down himself, but he was capable of getting a major in that match, so he wrestled really well," Borrelli said.
All in all, Borrelli said, it was a good opener for the Chippewas, who are scheduled to wrestle in the Army Black Knight Invitational on Sunday.
"There are a lot of things that we can improve on," he said. "We lost a one-point match at 125, we lost a one-point match at 165, we lost a one-point match in overtime at 149, and at heavyweight we lost a two-point match.
"We were right in the dual meet. I think we're capable of changing those outcomes. There's a lot to build on."
