Ten CMU Wrestlers Place at Season-Opening Michigan State Open

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Ten Central Michigan wrestlers placed in the top six in their respective weight classes on Saturday at the season-opening Michigan State open at the Spartans' Jenison Field House.
CMU's Johnny Lovett placed second at 149 pounds, Bryan Caves was fourth at 285, Corbyn Munson (157) and Tracy Hubbard (165) each placed fifth, and Alex Cramer (174) and Mason Shrader (149) each placed sixth.
Four Chippewas, Anthony Walker (125), Grayson Sonntag (149), Leo Galasso (165) and Lance Schyck (174), placed in the Fresh/Soph Division.
Galasso was third, Walker placed fourth, Sonntag was fifth, and Schyck finished sixth. Galasso is a sophomore; the other three are freshmen.
Twenty-nine Chippewa wrestlers competed in the tournament, which comprised 20 teams. No team scores were kept.
The Chippewas return to action with a trip to New York where they will take on ninth-ranked North Carolina State in a dual on Nov. 18 in Albany and then will partake in the Army Black Knight Invitational on Nov. 20.
• Lovett, a junior who last season qualified for the NCAA Championships and is ranked 14th nationally, fell on a first-period pin to Ohio State's Sammy Sasso in the 149-pound championship match. The third-ranked Sasso is a two-time All-American.
Lovett opened with a 4-0 win over Anthony Federico of Illinois, and then took a 6-2 decision from Isaiah Delgado of Utah Valley. Lovett reached the title match with a 5-3 SV-1 victory over Oklahoma's Mitch Moore.
• Caves, a sophomore, opened with a. 7-2 win over Keigan Yuhas of Findlay and then dropped a 6-2 decision to 18th-ranked Josh Heindselman of Oklahoma.
In the consolation bracket, Caves posted a 1-0 win over Terrese Aaron of Northern Illinois and then downed Dzhabrail Khurshidov of Michigan, 10-4. Caves was pinned in the third-place match by Daniel Bucknavich of Cleveland State.
• Munson, a senior who is ranked 28th, opened the tournament with a 15-0 technical fall over Cameron Monzadeh of Michigan State and then posted an 11-2 major decision victory over Luke Odom of Illinois.
Munson fell into the consolation bracket on a 19-3 technical fall loss to 23rd-ranked Paddy Gallagher of Ohio State. Munson fell on a third-period pin to Max Mayfield of Northwestern to reach the fifth-place match where he won via forfeit by Daniel Segura of Ohio.
• Hubbard, a senior who is ranked 32nd, opened with a 6-4 SV-1 win over Daniel Patten of Cleveland State and then fell on a 4-2 decision to 16th-ranked Gerrit Nijenhuis of Oklahoma.
In the consolation bracket, Hubbard topped Colton Blaha of Michigan State, 8-3, and then posted a 13-1 major-decision victory over Cameron Haddock of Utah Valley before falling to Caleb Fish of Michigan State on a second-period pin.
Hubbard then won the fifth-place match on a medical forfeit by Nijenhuis.
• Cramer, a junior, opened with a 15-3 major decision over Hayden Pummel of Northern Illinois and then posted a 10-2 major over Caden Ernd of Illinois. Cramer then dropped a 9-6 decision to Troy Fisher of Northwestern.

In the consolation bracket, Shrader posted a 13-4 major-decision win over Aidan Medora of Wisconsin; scored a 16-1 technical fall win over Jeff Mullinax of Findlay; pinned Michael Gunther of Illinois in the second period; and then defeated O'Brien, 3-2.
Shrader was then pinned in the first period by Mitch Moore of Oklahoma before bowing out of the fifth-place match with Kevon Davenport of Illinois.
