CHARLESTON, Ill. – Eastern Illinois outscored Central Michigan, 14-7, over the final 3:46 on Sunday in handing the Chippewas a 78-67 nonconference women's basketball loss at Lantz Arena.
The Chippewas (1-9) return home to play host to Chicago State (0-14) in a nonconference game on Sunday, Jan. 1 (1 p.m.) at McGuirk Arena.
The freshman trio of Bridget Utberg, Sydney Harris and Taylor Anderson scored 14 points apiece to lead CMU. It was a career high for Anderson, who made all eight of her free throw attempts.
CMU trailed, 64-60, when Lariah Washington scored on a layup with 3:46 left to trigger EIU's game-closing 14-7 spurt.
After Washington's bucket, EIU (8-2) got a three-point play from Morgan Litwiller and a Mia Monahan layup with 1:32 left to extend the lead to 71-60.
Washington, the preseason Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year, finished with a game-high 23 points.
The Chippewas outrebounded the Panthers, 47-33, and 22 of CMU boards came on the offensive end. CMU finished an outstanding 27 for 31 from the free throw line. The offensive rebounds and the free throw attempts and free throw makes were Chippewa season highs.
The Chippewas shot just 31 percent from the field overall and 17.4 percent from 3-point range.
