DeKALB, Ill. – Hannah DeMers finished first in three events, scoring season highs in all three, in leading the Central Michigan gymnastics team on Sunday in a quad meet at Northern Illinois.
The Chippewas finished with a 196.125 team score, their second highest of the season after the 196.475 they posted a week ago during a home tri-meet.
"It was a great road score for us," CMU coach Christine MacDonald said. "It's our highest road score of the year. It was an outstanding day."
Iowa State, which is ranked 37th nationally, was first with 196.275. The host Huskies (195.500) were third and Western Michigan (194.050) was fourth.
CMU went into the meet ranked 47th, the Huskies were 44th, and Western was 25th. It marks the second straight meet in which CMU has finished ahead of the Broncos.
DeMers, a junior from Canton, won the vault with a 9.900 score; tied for first on the uneven parallel bars (9.925); and won the floor exercise (9.925).
Heading into this weekend's competition, a 9.900 on vault tied for the second best by a MAC gymnast this season; a 9.925 was the highest bars score by a MAC gymnast this season; and the 9.925 tied for the third highest floor score by a MAC gymnast.
DeMers, who two weeks ago earned the MAC Gymnast of the Week Award, finished third in the all around with a 39.275.
"Hannah started off really strong on bars and did a good job of managing her beam routine and kept the flow going for us there and then came in strong on floor and vaulting," MacDonald said. "She's part of a great group in all those events.
"It's her ability to really stay focused and really dial it in when it's her turn to compete. She loves to compete; she thrives in that environment, and I think you're just continuing to see her shine."
Also for the Chippewas, Katie Kowalski tied for second on vault with a 9.850 and Sierra DeMarinis tied for third on floor with a 9.900; Adriana Bustelo tied her season-high with a 9.825 in placing third on balance beam and Kowalski (9.800) placed seventh; Audriana Hammond placed fifth on bars with a season-best 9.875.
The Chippewas finished the meet on vault, posting a season-best-tying 49.150. Their bars (49.050) and floor (49.275) scores were just a shade below their season bests.
Morgan Tong made her first appearance of the season after returning from an injury. She posted the Chippewas' third-highest score on beam, a 9.775.
"Morgan came in today, first time back in 10 months, and when we needed a hit score she did an amazing job," MacDonald said.
The leadership of Tong and DeMarinis, the senior captains, was invaluable on Sunday as it has been all season, MacDonald said.
"They really are the glue for this team," she said. "Just being able to get both seniors on the floor today was great for our team and really motivated us to push forward
"I think it's been the key to this team all year long. They're composed; it doesn't matter the meet, it doesn't matter the location, and it stems from our leadership. These captains really provide a calming but competitive atmosphere for this team. It's been so great to watch them in that role and this team has really thrived under them."
