Baseball Downs WKU In Series Opener For First Win

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Sometimes, the first win can be the hardest to get.
The Central Michigan baseball team celebrated its first win of the season on Friday, a 6-4 defeat of Western Kentucky in the opener of a four-game weekend series at the Hilltoppers' Nick Denes Field.
"I asked to get on the bus with a win, obviously," CMU coach Jordan Bischel said. "Last year, we started 0-4, so we're one step ahead. It was nice to get that first win under our belt, and we'll be excited to come out and play again tomorrow."
The Chippewas (1-3) and Hilltoppers (2-2) are set to play a doubleheader on Saturday (1 p.m.) before closing the series on Sunday (2 p.m.).
Mario Camilletti was hit by the pitch in the eighth inning, forcing in the go-ahead run and putting the Chippewas up, 5-4. Garrett Navarra's two-out RBI single in the ninth gave CMU an insurance run.
Reliever Jake Jones (1-0), a senior transfer from Murray State, went the final 3 1/3 innings for his first win as a Chippewa. He allowed one run on one hit and struck out two.
Jones came on in the sixth inning and the Chippewas leading, 4-3, with two out and the tying run at second base. He got an inning-ending groundout. He surrendered a run-scoring double in the seventh, but stranded the potential go-ahead run at second. Pitching with a one-run lead in the eighth, Jones got an inning-ending double play and then set down the Hilltoppers in order in the ninth.
"(Jones) did a great job tonight," Bischel said. "We expect him to be a really valuable relief pitcher. He had a lot of success at Murray State and has done a really nice job for us. It was exciting to see him pitch in an important spot and make some big pitches."
CMU starter Jordan Patty allowed two runs on five hits, walked two and struck out four over four innings. Ryan Insco went 1 2/3 innings in relief, surrendering one unearned run on two hits while striking out two.
Jacob Marsee doubled, tripled and drove in two runs to lead CMU's nine-hit attack. Danny Wuestenfeld also had two hits.
The Chippewas struck out 17 times and drew six walks against four WKU pitchers. Aristotle Peter (0-1), who went 3 1/3 innings in relief of starter Jake Kates, took the loss.
CMU stranded 13 base runners.
"Their pitchers had good stuff," Bischel said. "We did get quite a few guys on base and struggled to get the big hit; I thought our guys did a really good job of staying the course and trying to put pressure on in every inning, and, thankfully, we broke through with a couple late."
