MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Three Central Michigan gymnasts are headed to the NCAA Regional next week at Auburn.
CMU's Hannah DeMers, Sierra DeMarinis and Katie Kowalski will partake in the event, which is one of four regionals scheduled around the country. The trio will compete in the second session on Thursday, March 31, at 7 p.m. CT
"Clearly their work all year long has propelled them to this position and we are extremely proud of them and excited for them to have this opportunity to showcase their gymnastics at the national level and also to have the opportunity to compete beyond regionals," CMU coach Christine MacDonald said. "They are great representatives of our program, and they are going to continue to bring attention to the great gymnastics that this team has produced, not only this year, but historically."
The Chippewas did not qualify for the regional based on their average team national team qualifying score, which is 196.140. That score ranks 37th; the top 36 received a bid to one of the four regionals.
The three Chippewas received their regional bids based on their respective NQS scores. DeMers, a junior, will compete in the all around; DeMarinis, a senior, will compete on floor exercise; and Kowalski, a sophomore, will compete on vault.
DeMers' average all around score, 39.360, is tied for 27th nationally; DeMarinis' average floor score, 9.910, tied for 47th; Kowalski's average vault score, 9.865, tied for 60th.
A top 16 score in any of the four events, plus the all around, qualifies a gymnast for the regional as an individual provided the gymnast is not a member of a qualifying team.
