Patty Tames Huskies As Baseball Wins Series Opener
4/8/2022 8:32:00 PM | Baseball
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Jordan Patty kept his cool through seven innings on the mound on Friday, leading the Central Michigan baseball team to an 8-2 Mid-American Conference victory over Northern Illinois at Keilitz Field at Theunissen Stadium.
The league-leading Chippewas extended their conference win streak to 10, improving to 15-10, 10-1 MAC. Second-place Ball State (12-2 league) is playing a nonconference series at Oregon this weekend.
CMU and the Huskies (6-22, 6-9) continue the series on Saturday (2 p.m.) before closing with a Sunday doubleheader (12 p.m.).
Patty (3-2), a senior right-hander, struck out nine over 7 1/3 innings. He allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and walked one. The lone earned run came on a Carlos Aranda solo homer in the fourth inning. Patty has surrendered one earned run in his last two starts, a combined 15 1/3 innings during which he has struck out 18 and walked three.
"I don't think (the home run) bothered (Patty) a whole lot," CMU coach Jordan Bischel said. "Those things happen; solo homers usually don't beat you. (Aranda) put in a good swing on the ball, and (Patty) just moved on to the next guy and kept making pitches."
The Chippewas gave Patty a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a Danny Wuestenfeld sacrifice fly RBI and a steal of home by Jakob Marsee.
Marsee highlighted a four-run sixth inning with a two-run single. The Chippewas, who finished five hits, took advantage of three walks, a sacrifice bunt, two hit batters, a stolen base, and a wild pitch in extending their lead to 6-1.
CMU got a Mario Camilletti RBI single and a Marsee fly ball in the seventh to close the scoring.
Aidan Shepardson had two hits to lead CMU at the plate.
The Chippewas committed two errors, both in the seventh inning, that led to a Huskie run. CMU left 12 runners on base.
"I thought we could've played a little bit better defense and I thought we could have squared up a few more balls early," Bischel said. "But the guys picked each other up and when we did have a poor at-bat or a misplay defensively, somebody stepped up to make the next play, so we were able to limit mistakes and that kept us in a good spot.
"Hopefully, we can play just a little bit cleaner (on Saturday)."
