MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan gymnastics has named former Michigan standout Lexi Funk to an assistant coach position.
Funk, who served as a volunteer assistant at Michigan for the past two seasons, was an All-American on balance beam in 2019, a three-time All-Big Ten honoree, and helped lead the Wolverines to three Big Ten Championships and four consecutive league regular season titles.
"We are thrilled to have Lexi join our team and coaching staff," CMU coach Christine MacDonald said. "Her skill set as both a competitor and a coach will put her in a position to immediately contribute to the development of our team. Her passion, energy and can-do attitude are a welcomed additions to the Chippewa family."
Funk teamed with associate head coach Scott Sherman and fellow assistant Maile'ana Kanewa-Hermelyn in earning the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association Assistant Coaches of the Year Award in 2021 as the Wolverines won their first national title. The trio earned the Regional Assistant Coach of the Year Award in 2022.
Funk served as a team captain during her final two seasons as a Wolverine, was a two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, and was named a WCGA Scholastic All-American. She holds two bachelor of arts degrees from Michigan with majors in communication and media studies and Spanish.
