CMU Women Fall at Akron

AKRON, Ohio – Akron used a 17-4 run over the final 4-plus minutes of the third quarter to pull away in handing Central Michigan an 80-65 Mid-American Conference women's basketball loss on Wednesday at James A. Rhodes Arena.
The Chippewas slipped to 3-13, 1-4 MAC. They play at Ball State, 14-4, 4-1, on Saturday, Jan. 21 (1 p.m.).
Akron, which entered the game in a five-way tie for first place in the league, improved to 13-3, 4-1.
CMU jumped to a 10-0 lead and led, 17-4, late in the first quarter. The Chippewas led 33-30 at halftime and were down just two points, 41-39, with under five minutes remaining in the third quarter.
Molly Neitzel hit two free throws with 4:38 to play in the quarter to trigger Akron's game-changing spurt that left it with a 57-43 advantage heading into the fourth.
Akron, which outscored CMU, 50-33, in the second half, made 57.1 percent of its field goal attempts in the third quarter.
The Chippewas made just one of their 14 3-point attempts in the game; they never got closer than 12 points in the final quarter.
Bridget Utberg scored 16 points to lead CMU, while Sydney Harris and Rochelle Norris added 14 apiece.
Norris had 13 rebounds for her third double-double in her last five games.
It marked the sixth time in seven games that Utberg, a freshman guard, has scored in double digits after reaching that mark just three times in her first nine.
