Gymnastics Comes From Behind to Defeat Bowling Green

Chippewas rally from deficit to defeat Falcons 194.100-193.775, improve to 2-0 in MAC competition; Taylor Pitchell wins meet on final performance of the night for Central Michigan.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.—On the final performance of the evening with the Chippewas trailing, senior Taylor Pitchell totaled a 9.775 on floor to give Central Michigan a 194.200-193.775 victory over Bowling Green Friday evening at McGuirk Arena. With the win, Central Michigan improves to 2-0 in MAC competition.
For the second consecutive meet, it came down to floor exercise for Central Michigan as the Chippewas entered the final event trailing Bowling Green by 0.30 points. With each floor performance, the Chippewas inched their way back as redshirt sophomore Hallie Hornbacher registered a 9.825, freshman Luciana Alvarado-Reid finished with a 9.825, senior Ashley Veglucci notched a 9.875, and Pitchell ended it with her 9.775.
"We talked about going out that earning it, one rotation at a time," Central Michigan Head Coach Christine MacDonald said. "Heading into floor, we had to reset and they did a great job. We just go in there and execute our game plan and at the end of the day, the hope is you come out on top. We are prepared on every event. Today, they shined at the last rotation."
In the all-around, Alvarado-Reid totaled a 38.800, while senior Hannah DeMers tallied a 37.900.
Central Michigan took an early lead on vault as Alvarado-Reid and sophomore Avah Bootz led the Chippewas with identical 9.825 scores. Sophomore Quinn Skrupa added a 9.800.
Next up was the bars, where the Chippewas maintained their lead. Senior Audriana Hammond registered a 9.875, sophomore Lia Kmieciak added a 9.800, Alvarado-Reid registered a 9.850, and DeMers concluded with the best score of the night, a 9.900.
Bowling Green took the lead after CMU completed beam. Junior Adriana Bustelo led the Chippewas with a team-best 9.650, while PItchell added a 9.625.
The event marked the second of three consecutive home meets for CMU Gymnastics. Next up, the Chippewas host Eastern Michigan on Friday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. for their Senior Day meet.
"The season is a continuation," MacDonald said. "We take it one weekend at a time. We'll learn from today, we had a lot of workables, a lot of positives. We're excited to build off of this weekend."
