Freshman point guard Tamara Ortiz breaks out for game-high 16 points in 22 minutes; defensive emphasis shows through
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Central Michigan Women's Baskteball took the John G. Kulhavi Court at McGuirk Arena for its first competition of 2023-24 Sunday to take a 75-61 win from NCAA II Davenport University in exhibition play.
The Chippewas collected four double-digit scorers, led by freshman point guard Tamara Ortiz (Columbus, Ohio / Westerville South) with 16 points. Sophomore guard Taylor Anderson (South Lyon, Mich. / South Lyon East) led the rebounding effort with a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double. The duo each shared the team-highs of three assists and two steals.
Much of the first half was spent ironing out the schematics and rotation for the first-year staff under Head Coach Kristin Haynie as eight of nine active players each had one field goal in the first half.
The defensive emphasis took control with eight forced turnovers in the third quarter, as Ortiz and Anderson combined for 14 of CMU's 20 points in the third quarter to just nine for the Panthers.
Senior Rochelle Norris (Stafford, Va. / New Hope) and sophomore Madisen Wardell (Detroit, Mich. / Edison) round out the Chippewas' double-digit scorers at 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Davenport Head Coach Shonda Sanders was highlighted in a pregame ceremony prior to Sunday's noon tipoff as a former player under the Central Michigan banner, one of the first freshman for legendary Chippewa coach Sue Guevara. Sanders was a member of the CMU program from 2007-11, graduating as the all-time leader in three-pointers made and sixth all-time in career scoring.
The 2023-24 regular season begins Nov. 9 at South Alabama for the first of two contests in the season's MAC-Sun Belt Challenge. The Chippewas will visit Bradley (Nov. 12) before the 2023-24 home-opener Nov. 14 against Concordia-Ann Arbor.
