Wardell, Jean post career nights to grab Coach Haynie’s first win leading the Chippewas
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Home, sweet home.
Central Michigan Women's Basketball opened the McGuirk Arena Tuesday night with an 80-57 victory over Concordia-Ann Arbor, the first in the head coaching career of Kristin Haynie.
The feat came thanks to a breakthrough performance from sophomore Madisen Wardell (Detroit, Mich. / Edison). The DePaul transfer—making her official McGuirk Arena debut Tuesday as well—set new career-highs of 22 points and 10 rebounds, all while shooting 50 percent from the field (9-of-18) and conceding just one turnover in nearly 34 minutes on the floor.
"She's a gym rat," Haynie said, "so it's not a surprise. We'll see that many times this year."
Fifth-year Nadège Jean (Richton Park, Ill. / Rich South) had herself a career night with 15 of the Chippewas' 29 bench points on six-of-eight from the field and seven rebounds in 20 minutes of play.
Wardell and fellow sophomore Taylor Anderson (South Lyon, Mich. / South Lyon East) each collected a double-double in the contest as Anderson matched her career high of 10 rebounds and was just one point from her career mark with 12 points.
A relatively slow start still plagued the Chippewas Tuesday night as the Cardinals fought for the lead through the first 15 minutes and led by as many as five points just past the first quarter break. A 10-2 CMU run—contributed to by five different Chippewas—broke the game open in the latter half of the second quarter.
A glaring change? Rebounding. Central Michigan cleared 50 rebounds in a regular-season game for the first time since January 29, 2020 with 53. Wardell, Anderson, Jean and senior Rochelle Norris (Stafford, Va. / New Hope Academy) all collected at least seven rebounds in the contest.
"We went to the 'O' boards better tonight," Haynie said, an advantage CMU held 18-8. "We gotta keep the pressure on the offensive end and rebound."
The Chippewas stare down another road swing, at Cleveland State Nov. 18 (2 p.m.) and at UW-Milwaukee Nov. 25 (Noon) for consecutive Saturdays. Indiana State's visit on Dec. 2 (1 p.m.) is the only home contest of the next six for Central Michigan between Tuesday night's matchup and the start of Mid-American Conference play Jan. 3 against Bowling Green (7 p.m.).
