Loyola Chicago Starts Fast, Defeats Men's Basketball

Chippewas open Mid-American Conference play on Tuesday, Jan. 2 when they host Buffalo at 7 p.m.
CHICAGO, Ill.—Loyola Chicago scored the game's first 12 points, then used a 10-0 run midway through the first half to take control of the contest in notching a 73-35 men's basketball win over Central Michigan Saturday afternoon at Gentile Arena.
Playing in their first contest following a nine-day holiday, break, the Chippewas scored their fewest points of the year (35), had their worst shooting game (23.7 percent), converted their fewest field goals (14), and hit their fewest 3-pointers of the year (1) in the contest. The 35 points were the fewest points scored by Central Michigan since they finished with 35 at Buffalo on Feb. 21, 2023.
The decision snapped a two-game win streak for Central Michigan after the Chippewas won back-to-back home victories over Davenport and Detroit. The win improved Loyola Chicago to 8-5 on the year, while Central Michigan drops to 5-7 overall.
Central Michigan opens Mid-American Conference play on Tuesday, Jan. 2 when it hosts Buffalo at McGuirk Arena. Tipoff for that game is at 7 p.m.
Loyola was led by Philip Alston, who finished with 15 points and five rebounds, Miles Rubin added 13 points and nine rebounds, Braden Norris contributed 12 points, and Des Watson finished with 10 points. The host Ramblers hit 47.4 percent (27-57) of their shots, including eight 3-pointers and outrebounded CMU 48-33. The Ramblers dished out 21 assists on 27 field goals made.
From the opening tipoff, Loyola jumped out to an early lead as the Ramblers scored the game's first 12 points. Jayden Dawson hit a 3-pointer to get the Ramblers started, Rubin converted a free throw, Alston hit a layup for a 6-0 lead, Watson scored on a dunk and Alston hit two more free throws for a 12-0 lead before CMU's Anthony Pritchard scored on a jumper.
Loyola then used a 10-0 run to take an 18 point lead (22-4) with 10:04 to play in the first half on a driving layup by Dawson. The Ramblers pushed their lead to as many as 23 points (32-9) with 2:04 left in the half on an Alston layup and then took a 23-point lead (37-14) into halftime. CMU's 14 first half points were its fewest scored in a half this year.
Central Michigan was held to 21 points in the second half as the Ramblers pushed their lead to 40 points with 40 seconds to play.
No one reached double figure scoring for Central Michigan. Pritchard led the Chippewas with eight points and six rebounds and Brian Taylor finished with seven points and nine rebounds. Markus Harding did not play.
CMU shot 23.7 percent (14-59) from the floor and 14.3 percent (1-12) from 3-point range.
