Shorthanded CMU Women Fall at Home to Toledo

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan played without its starting point guard. And against one of the Mid-American Conference's best teams, it was an uphill climb to say the least.
An experienced Toledo team used balance scoring and a solid across-the-board defensive effort on Wednesday in handing Central Michigan a 74-60 women's basketball loss at McGuirk Arena.
The Chippewas are 4-16, 2-7 MAC. Toledo, which starts four upperclassmen, won for the 15th time in its last 17 games, improving to 16-4, 7-2.
"Think of a couple years ago, they were freshmen and they've just continued to get better over the years," CMU coach Heather Oesterle said of the Rockets. "I think we have that potential, but we have to see it every night."
The Chippewas, playing without injured point guard Bridget Utberg, committed 19 turnovers and never found its rhythm.
"We weren't able to do a lot of the sets that we normally do because she wasn't in the game," Oesterle said of Utberg, who is CMU's second-leading scorer at 11 points per game. "You take out a scoring threat -- Bridget's a scoring point guard."
Sammi Mikonowicz scored 19 points, Quinesha Lockett had 15, Sophia Wiard added 14 for the Rockets, who made 47.6 percent of their field goal attempts, outrebounded the Chippewas by a wide margin, and finished with a 44-32 edge in points in the paint.
Freshman Sydney Harris scored 19 points and sophomore Karrington Gordon came off the bench for a career-high 16 to lead CMU.
Harris scored CMU's first eight points of the game, but then had just two – on a pair of third-quarter free throws – until the fourth.
By the time Harris and Gordon got hot from the outside, CMU was down by 20-plus points. Harris and Gordon finished a combined 5-for-10 from 3-point range. All five of their long-range makes came in the final 10 minutes.
Those triples helped CMU trim its deficit to 13, 70-57, with 2:21 to play. But the Chippewas could get no closer against a Toledo team that is No. 1 in the MAC in 3-point field goal defense.
