CMU goes to 11th-ranked Michigan on Sunday for final dual of the season
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Michigan State won six of the 10 matches and scored bonus points in two of its victories on Friday in handing Central Michigan a 20-13 loss in a nonconference wrestling dual at McGuirk Arena.
It was the final home dual of the season for the Chippewas, who are 6-9 and close the regular season on Sunday, Feb. 19 (5 p.m.) at No. 11 Michigan.
The Chippewas celebrated Senior Night before a crowd of 1,003, the largest of the season.
The Chippewas got a major-decision victory from Johnny Lovett at 149 pounds and decision wins from Sean Spidle (125), Bryan Caves (285), and Alex Cramer (174).
MSU (10-6), which is ranked 23rd, scored major-decision wins at 133 and at 197.
"I thought our guys battled hard," CMU coach Tom Borrelli said. "Our guys, they're scrappy, they're going to fight. We've just got to seal the deal in a couple weight classes.
"There were four (losses) that we were right in the middle of them. We win one or two of them, we win the dual meet."
CMU's Corbyn Munson, who is ranked 28th nationally, dropped a 4-3 decision to 11th-ranked Chase Saldate at 157 in the lone matchup of the night featuring two ranked wrestlers.
Munson tied the match, 3-3, with a late reversal, but Saldate won with a riding-time point.
The Chippewas' Tracy Hubbard dropped a 4-2 decision to 20th-ranked Caleb Fish at 165, and CMU senior Ben Cushman fell, 7-4, to 13th-ranked Layne Malczewski at 184.
Spidle, a junior who is in his first season as the Chippewas' starter at 125, took a 6-2 decision from junior Tristan Lujan, who entered the dual 15-7 on the season.
Caves, a freshman, was particularly impressive in his 5-1 victory at 285 over grad student Ryan Vasbinder, who was the 2021 Division II national champion at 197 pounds while wrestling for McKendrie.
"This is good for us because this is the way the conference tournament's going to be," Borrelli said. "You're going to have the seal the deal and win close matches."
