KENT, Ohio – A short-handed Central Michigan women's basketball team stood toe to toe with one of the Mid-American Conference's top-tier teams on Wednesday, but in the end, didn't have enough.
Kent State held off the Chippewas, 68-63, in a nip-and-tuck battle at the Golden Flashes' M.A.C. Center.
The Chippewas, playing without several key players including point guard Bridget Utberg and battling late-game foul trouble, slipped to 4-18, 2-9 MAC.
They entertain Buffalo (9-11, 4-7) on Saturday (1 p.m.) at McGuirk Arena.
The Chippewas never led in the fourth quarter and were down three, 61-58, after a Sydney Harris 3-pointer with 1:36 to play.
Kent State (15-7, 7-4) got a backbreaking triple from Katie Shumate with 1:06 left to restore the CMU deficit to six, 64-58.
Shumate, who scored 12 of her game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter and finished with 12 rebounds, hit four free throws in the final 12 seconds to keep CMU at bay.
Karrington Gordon's 3-pointer with 2 seconds left drew CMU to 66-63.
Harris scored 19 points – 14 of which came in the second half -- to lead the Chippewas, while Rochelle Norris added 16 points and 12 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season.
CMU was without not only Utberg, but veteran Jahari Smith and key reserve Jnaya Walker. They lost starting guard Tiana Timpe to an injury midway through the second quarter, leaving coach Heather Oesterle with just eight players for the remainder of the night.
As to be expected under such circumstances, the Chippewas found themselves battling foul trouble. Guard Anika Weekes (eight points, eight rebounds) fouled out in the fourth quarter and three other Chippewas finished the game with four fouls apiece.
The game was tight all the way.
Down 32-27 early in the third quarter, CMU used a 13-0 spurt to seize a 40-32 lead. The eight-point advantage was the largest lead of the night by either team.
The game featured nine ties, the last of which was broken with a 4:54 remaining on a Coryanne Hauser jumper that put the Golden Flashes in front, 56-54.
The Golden Flashes made 15 of their 21 free throw tries, including eight of 10 in the fourth quarter. CMU finished nine for 17 from the line.
CMU outrebounded the Golden Flashes, 43-29, including 21-8 on the offensive end.
