Coons Leads CMU Men's Golf With Career-Best 71 at Desert Mountain Intercollegiate

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Orlando Coons shot a 1-under par 71 on Sunday to lead the Central Michigan men's golf team in the final round of the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate on the Outlaw Course at Desert Mountain Golf Club.
Coons finished with a 54-hole 229 total to finish in a tie for 52nd place in the 93-player field.
The Chippewas posted a 304 team total in Sunday's final round, their best score in the three-round, 54-hole tournament.
They opened on Saturday with a 306 total and then shot 312 in the second round, which was suspended by darkness on Saturday and completed on Sunday morning.
CMU totaled 922 for the event and finished 14th in the 16-team field. No. 22 Mississippi State closed with a 290 on Sunday and won the tournament with an 866 total.
The Bulldogs led wire to wire and won by nine shots over No. 42 Little Rock and host Michigan, both of which finished at 875.
Coons' Sunday 71 is a career best and it was the best round by a CMU player in the tournament.
Also for CMU on Sunday, Easton Phillips shot 75, Philippe Yturralde shot 78, Jeffrey Andrus carded an 80, and Ethan Jaehn came in with an 83.
Yturralde and Jaehn both finished with a 232 total and among a group tied for 68th. Andrus finished at 237 and Phillips at 242.
All five Chippewas completed their respective second rounds on Sunday morning. Jaehn shot 76; Yturralde, 77; Andrus, 79; Coons, 80; and Phillips, 83.
All five of the Chippewas are freshmen. CMU is in its first year of varsity men's golf after a 37-year hiatus.
Ruan Pretorius of Mississippi State closed with a 2-under 70 for an 8-under 208 total and a three-shot victory over Little Rock's Matteo Cristoni.
The Chippewas are scheduled to play in the Sam Houston State Bearkat Invitational in Conroe, Texas on April 3-4.
