MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The Central Michigan softball team advanced their record to 6-8 after splitting the third day at The Spring Games. The Chippewas dropped a 1-0 decision to Coastal Carolina and beat Southern Indiana 9-0 in five innings to end the day.
The morning game with Coastal Carolina was a true pitcher dual. Graduate Student Kaitlyn Bean took the circle for the Chippewas and threw a complete seven innings. Bean issued only four hits, one of which was an RBI single to Peyton Ebersole in the bottom half of the fourth inning.
That was the lone run scored in that game by either team. Bean's record moves to 2-4 on the year. Central Michigan recorded five hits on the loss. Kelsey Alexander collected two of them, while Caitlyn Britton, Emily Bracamonte and Angela Petrovitch each had one.
"I think Bean did a great job of shutting down a high-power offense and giving us the chance to win. Unfortunately, we just came up short on the offensive end." Head Coach McCall Salmon said.
In the afternoon game, the Chippewas found the offensive spark they were looking for in the morning which led them to a run-rule victory over Southern Indiana.
Madelyn Wallace took the win for the Chippewas, moving her record to 2-1 on the season. Cierra Laska threw the final three outs to end the game after 4.5 innings. "Maddy did everything we expected and needed her to do in that game."
"Overall, I am excited with our ability to come back from a tough loss in the morning and ultimately earn a split on the day."
Central Michigan recorded seven hits in the outing, scoring nine runs. Grabbing hits for the Chippewas were Michaleigh Vallimont, who had two, while Abbey Tolmie, Kelsey Alexander, Skylar Coberley, Lucy Cronin, and Emily Bracamonte all had one.
Coberley led the Chippewas with two RBI, Vallimont, Alexander, Cronin and Bracamonte also charted one a piece.
A five run fourth inning broke the game open for Central Michigan. That inning started with back-to-back walks for Maddie Springer and Caitlyn Britton. Bracamonte's double then drove home Tailynn Knapp who pinch ran for Britton. That run gave CMU the 5-0 advantage. The hits did not stop after that.
"It was nice to see our offense produce in the run column after only producing one run in the last 14 innings."
Faith Callahan reached base after being hit by a pitch, a Vallimont single scored Bracamonte, Callahan then scored following a wild pitch. A grounder by Alexander scored Tolmie, and Vallimont scored the final run of the game when she crossed home on a wild pitch.
The Chippewas will take on Southern Indiana again in a single game on Tuesday, March 7th. That game is slated for 11 a.m.
