OXFORD, Ohio – One hit was the deciding factor in the Chippewas' Mid-American Conference Softball Tournament opening game against Ohio. Ohio scored two runs on a base hit in the bottom of the sixth inning to score the only two runs of the game in winning a 2-0 decision.
The tournament is a double elimination format so the Chippewas will play No. 4 Ball State on Friday, May 12 at noon at the Miami Softball Stadium. Miami (Ohio), the regular season champion, is the host of the tournament. The Redhawks defeated the Cardinals 8-4 on Thursday afternoon.
Grace Lehto threw another complete game for the Chippewas, her ninth of the season, surrendering only four hits to the Bobcats. Lehto struck out four batters in the outing, and moves to 14-15 on the season.
Abbey Tolmie and Kelsey Alexander were the only two Chippewas to record a hit in the game. Samantha Mills reached on an error by the second baseman in the second inning and Allyssa Hollo, Alexander and Coberley drew walks in the contest. Tolmie was hit by a pitch in the fifth to bring the Chippewas baserunner total to seven in the game. All seven players were left stranded.
"Grace gave us the opportunity to win the game," Central Michigan Head Coach McCall Salmon said. "Credit Ohio, they got the key hit at the key time. Unfortunately, we just were not able to find it today. That just continues to motivate us as we head into tomorrow. We will learn from this, we know this will be a dog fight and we are prepared to keep fighting."
