Gordon logs sixth straight double-digit performance; Chippewa defense turns heads with 10 steals, five blocks; turnover struggles loom
AKRON, Ohio — Central Michigan Women's Basketball saw its tightest 40 minutes of the season Wednesday night at Akron's Rhodes Arena as Mid-American Conference foes combine for 15 ties and 12 lead changes in a 70-62 result.
The Chippewas led for nearly 19 minutes of the contest, Akron spent 11 minutes in the lead with 10 minutes elapsed in a tie. Until the final trip to the line for the Zips, neither team logged a lead of more than six points.
Junior Karrington Gordon (Detroit / Lincoln Park) improved to six straight games scoring in double-figures with a team-high 19 points, coming one shy of being the first Chippewa to have back-to-back 20-point games in nearly a calendar year. All eight players to take a shot in the contest made at least two field goals and tallied at least five points.
Senior Rochelle Norris (Stafford, Va. / New Hope) took on 28 minutes in Wednesday's rotation and made the most of it with team-highs of 11 rebounds and three blocks—her seventh multi-block performance of the season, fourth with three-plus.
The uptick in minutes for Norris—up from a 19.9 mpg average prior to tip—came due to early foul trouble for the upward-trending Nadège Jean (Richton Park, Ill. / Rich South) who still managed to post six points in three straight scoring possessions to end the first half.
Sophomore Taylor Anderson (South Lyon, Mich. / East) put up four steals—three in the first half—to go with eight points and five rebounds. Anderson was the catalyst to multiple CMU runs and lead changes in the contest as three of her steals led to points and her lone three-pointer came in a 9-0 run early in the fourth quarter.
All four players mentioned were marred with foul trouble at least late in the contest, if not for its most of the game in Jean's case. Late-stage fouling in the Chippewas' last-minute comeback effort led to early exits for both Jean and Anderson, Norris and Gordon each ended with four fouls.
CMU recorded its fourth-best game by field goal percentage of the season (41 percent), its best output since a 43.4 percent clip against Indiana State (Dec. 2); its 10 steals came one shy of the season-high set in the opener at South Alabama (Nov. 9).
Central Michigan Women's Basketball will visit Eastern Michigan Saturday (Jan. 13, 1 p.m.) before returning to McGuirk Arena to host Ball State Wednesday (Jan. 17, 11 a.m.) for its annual Hoops for Hunger event.
