Anya Turner and Natalie Newcombe moved into the CMU All-Time Top 10 Rankings at the Jack Skoog Open
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – One for the books- literally.
Central Michigan Track and Field turned in a record-breaking day on Saturday during the annual Jack Skoog Open as the Chippewas won 10 of the 13 events it competed in, and was not only highlighted by Emily Paupore breaking the indoor mile record, but by a multitude of personal records and movement up the CMU All-Time Top 10 performance lists.
Surrounded by family, friends and packed stands full of spectators, CMU celebrated its 15 graduating student-athletes. The following Chippewas were honored as part of Senior Day: Ericka Bigham, Sarah Daniel, Emma Fountain, Peyton Korytkowski, Shelby Korytkowski, Annie Laurenz, Lauren MacDonald, Ashlyn Nagel, Natalie Newcombe, Jelena Prescott, Maija Rettelle, Jaci Rife, Kaitlynn Rush, Payton Sabourin and Anya Turner.
Also competing in the event were Alma, Albion, Lake Superior State and Olivet, among others. No team scores were recorded.
The energy inside the Jack Skoog Indoor Track was palpable. The crowd came out to support the Chippewas, and Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Jenny Swieton was very pleased with the turnout.
"Nothing else can match it," Swieton said of competing in front of a home crowd. "It's one time a year for indoor, and it's just so fun to compete for them. A lot of their friends from other teams or their professors might not understand the chaos and fun that is track and field."
CMU's dominance was highlighted during the mile run, when redshirt junior Emily Paupore achieved an indoor track record time of 4:48.28. She didn't technically win the event, however, as CMU assistant coach Amanda Eccleston - who raced alongside Paupore - ran in the event and finished with a time of 4:47.60.
In addition to Paupore's dazzling performance, two other Chippewas etched their names into the record books during the mile. Anya Turner placed third in the race, moving into third place all-time in the event with a time of 4:50.35, while Natalie Newcombe placed fourth and moved into fifth place all-time with a 4:51.40.
"We knew (Paupore) was going to run fast," Swieton said. "She had a really big workout this week that indicated she would run well. That's why Amanda (Eccleston) decided to race it. It gave her the opportunity to race someone (as fast as) that. And we knew (Turner) and (Newcombe) are super fit and we knew that something was in there, but they'd never broken five minutes before. So we were like 'you guys are going to break five, you can do it.'
"For all that to happen today, it's one of those things where you're just watching the race and you're like 'they're still in it, holy crap, they're going to do it.' That was just so exciting and for them to all be able to celebrate as a team was special."
Behind Eccleston, CMU athletes held places 2-14 in the mile race.
Paupore added on to her career day with a win in the 800m run, registering a time of 2:18.36. On top of the win, Chippewas placed 1-7, and 10 of the first 11 to finish were CMU athletes.
Sprinter Peyton Korytkowski took home the win in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.89 as the only Chippewa to compete in the event. She also won the 60m dash with a time of 7.73.
In addition to Korytkowski's win in the event, junior Kaitlynn Rush (8.10) and freshman Sky Austin (8.14) took second and third place as the only other CMU athletes to compete in the event.
The Chippewas cleaned house during the 400m dash, as the top nine places in the race belonged to CMU. Senior Payton Sabourin took home the event win with a time of 57.69.
Sabourin also won the 200m dash with a 25.71. The Chippewas finished in places 1-7 in the event.
CMU rounded out its running events with a win, as Annie Bennett took home first-place honors in the 3000m run with a time of 1:36.63. Behind Bennett were Chippewas Sophie Thomas and Lauren Hasty in spots two and three.
In her first time competing in the 600, Turner claimed the win with Gouin and Prescott hot on her heels. Gouin and Prescott both attained personal records.
In field events, CMU took home wins in the weight throw (Emily McLean, 15.38m), long jump (Sarah Daniel, 5.61m) and shot put (McLean, 13.25m). Additionally, Chippewas Emily Yoshino and Riley Nielson claimed second and third place in pole vault.
CMU will return to competition next Friday, Jan. 26 at the Michigan Invitational in Ann Arbor.
