Another strong performance from Norris, Jean puts Central Michigan back in the win column; Chippewas record most assists in nearly three years
CHICAGO — Central Michigan Women's Basketball rebounded to claim victory Sunday at Chicago State, 66-55, in the second day of a back-to-back with a staggering 15-0 run that lasted over five minutes split by the final quarter break.
"It was just about scheduling so we could come out here once," Head Coach Kristin Haynie said of the rare back-to-back weekend, "but that's what is going to be like in Cleveland. You have to turn around and think of the positive."
The Chippewas recorded 21 assists on 29 made field goals Sunday, the most assists since Jan. 27, 2021 at Toledo, an 83-74 victory. Rochelle Norris (Stafford, Va. / New Hope) cashed in on the efficient passing as 14 of her team-high 16 points were assisted, predominantly by Lisa Tesson (Montréal, Québec / Royal Crown) who led the way with a career high-tying six assists.
"Our players are doing a better job of finding [Norris] on the block. Credit the players for getting her the ball, but also to her for getting good positioning deep on the block."
Nadège Jean (Richton Park, Ill. / Rich South) joined Norris in double-figures with 12 points and was one rebound shy of her fourth double-double of the season, leading six Chippewas with five or more rebounds on the afternoon. Jean posted six of her nine rebounds in the second half, leading a 22-16 second-half advantage on the boards after a 25-23 deficit in the first.
"We got outrebounded yesterday, and we felt like we weren't doing a good job in the first half as well, so we stressed it at halftime. Rebounding is an attitude: it's about effort, it's about hustle."
Central Michigan led by as many as 11 points in the first half as the first of three three-pointers from Tiana Timpe (Stockton, Ill. / Stockton) marked a 27-16 margin in the second quarter and the end of a quick 7-0 run. All three baskets were also credited assists, two for Alina Anderson (Rockford, Mich. / Rockford).
"We talk a lot about sharing the ball. We played downhill a lot and were able to dump to our bigs, but also drive-and-kick. We're trying to preach turning down a good shot for a great shot."
Chicago State managed to work back into just a 32-30 deficit at the half and briefly took a 35-32 lead after the break.
Madisen Wardell (Detroit / Edison PSA) dropped in a pair of three-pointers of her own within the final 45 seconds of the third quarter for an 8-0 run in response to a 41-39 deficit. The run ballooned to a 15-0 run three minutes into the fourth, effectively closing out the contest.
CMU's largest lead of the night (19), and largest over any opponent since Dec. 9 (at Oakland; 20 pts.), was marked on Jean's final FG of the night, 66-47, with 2:52 remaining.
Despite drawing more fouls than Chicago State Sunday (14-12), Central Michigan attempted just five free throws to the Cougars' 18 in the contest, just one attempt from the stripe in the second half.
The Chippewas were also left shorthanded Sunday after Karrington Gordon (Detroit / Lincoln Park) was left on the shelf after taking a fall in pregame warmups. Gordon still attempted to start the contest but was relieved less than two minutes later.
Central Michigan Women's Basketball returns to McGuirk Arena, and the Mid-American Conference schedule, Wednesday night to face Ohio (Jan. 24; 7 p.m. ET) followed by Western Michigan Saturday afternoon (Jan. 27; 1 p.m. ET).
