Four Chippewas land in double-figures for first time since Dec. 2023
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Central Michigan Women's Basketball dropped its first road contest of the season at Michigan in Crisler Arena Thursday night, 99-62.
Four Chippewas landed in double-figures scoring, the first time since last season's bout at Oakland (Dec. 9, 2023), led by freshman Riley Smith (Miamisburg, Ohio / Archbishop Alter) on the back of three made three-pointers. Seniors Jess Lawson (Las Vegas, Nev. / Legacy), Lisa Tesson (Montréal, Québec / Royal Crown) and freshman Ayanna-Sarai Darrington (Lexington, Ky. / Frederick Douglass) all followed suit with 12 points apiece.
Lawson notched her 1,000th career point with her first basket of the night. True to her style, she did it with a steal in the backcourt and an open lane.
"Jess is a talented player," Head Coach Kristin Haynie said. "To score 1,000 points in college is an unbelievable achievement and to do it at the beginning of your senior year, just goes to show what kind of player she is. When I announced it in the locker room, the team was genuinely happy."
Tesson notched all 12 points in the second half as the Chippewas went stride for stride with the Wolverines over the final 20 minutes.
"Lisa did a really good job in the second half. I felt like she kept her composure, and she was looking to attack more. She's going to continue to get better, improve and she just has to have that confidence to carry that over into games."
Key takeaways from Thursday's bout were better ball movement and a very active bench.
On having 13 assists on 22 field goals: "I think some of our earlier games and scrimmages we didn't have that many assists so that's us continuing to get to know each other and the system: it's a process."
"We have a lot of bench players that could start but they're accepting their role. Whether they're starting or not they just come in and play hard and they're coachable. After watching the starters and just watching the game, scoring 46 points from the bench against a Big Ten team is pretty awesome."
Central Michigan Women's Basketball returns to McGuirk Arena for a two-game homestand on back-to-back Sundays. Bradley visits Mount Pleasant this Sunday (Nov. 17; 1 p.m.) with Oakland the following (Nov. 24; 1 p.m.).
