CMU tallies overwhelming 27 offensive rebounds, erase 10-point second quarter deficit by halftime; Lawson leads with 14 points, eight rebounds
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Central Michigan Women's Basketball dropped its final home matchup of November Sunday afternoon, 76-65, to Oakland despite a dominant performance on the offensive glass and a 24-5 margin in second-chance points.
"We did a really good job of rebounding," Head Coach Kristin Haynie said. "We talked about crashing, and they did a good job of crashing."
Sunday marked the 12th game of 20-plus offensive rebounds for the Chippewas in the last decade, coming one shy of the high mark for the last 20 seasons at Ball State on Feb. 7, 2013.
After an eight-for-16 first quarter, the Chippewas shot 15-of-54 from the field over the final 30 minutes.
"Overall, we can't shoot the way we shot. We have to get our second-chance points. We have to do a better job of looking for kickouts for threes and not forcing up shots."
Central Michigan faced a 10-point deficit twice in the first half, once with 58 seconds left in the first (23-13) then at 5:51 left in the second (29-19). A Natalie Lathrop (Tualatin, Ore. / Tualatin) tip-in at the buzzer levelled the contest and capped a 9-0 run to end the half, the second Jayda Mosley (Cincinnati, Ohio / Purcell Marian) three-pointer took CMU's first lead since the opening basket early in the third.
"We dug ourselves a hole, but did a good job fighting back to take the lead. Now we just have to keep it and sustain it."
The Chippewas' scoring leader, Jess Lawson (Las Vegas, Nev. / Legacy), led the way with nine of her season-high 14 points at the half. Through 20 minutes, CMU had already forced more turnovers of the Grizzlies (11) than it had in all of last season's contest (9).
A one-sided first quarter for Oakland, then a momentum swing back to the Chippewas in the second led to a tit-for-tat third period. The two sides combined for 13 lead changes and five tied scores with neither team leading by more than one point in the final four-plus minutes of the quarter.
Madi Morson (Canton, Mich. / Salem) led CMU in the second half with eight points after a 0-for-4 start from the field. Lawson added five points, three assists and combined with Demetria Prewitt (Madison, Wis. / La Follette) with 11 rebounds.
The fast-paced Chippewas take their end-to-end style on the road to the Nevada Nugget Classic, opening with the host Wolfpack on Black Friday.
"We have to be road warriors. We're playing really good teams and they're back-to-back-to-back, so we have to be able to be tough."
Central Michigan Women's Basketball will battle Nevada (Nov. 29), Portland (Nov. 30) and Southern Utah (Dec. 1) in the Nugget Classic before returning to McGuirk Arena for Concordia (MI) on Dec. 4.
