RENO, Nev. – Portland made 21 of its 28 free throw attempts on Saturday in holding off the Central Michigan women's basketball team, 68-58, in the Chippewas' second game of the Nevada Nugget Classic at Lawlor Events Center.
CMU (1-5), which opened the tournament on Friday with a 60-57 win over host Nevada, is scheduled to close the tournament on Sunday (2 p.m.) against Southern Utah (1-7). Southern Utah fell on Saturday to Nevada, 72-54.
Emme Shearer scored 18 points to lead the Pilots, who improved to 7-0.
Freshman Madi Morson made seven of her 11 field goal attempts in scoring a career-high 18 points to lead CMU. Taylor Anderson added 10 points and leading scorer Jess Lawson had eight and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
The Chippewas held the lead throughout much of the first half. Their largest advantage, seven points, came on a Taylor Johnson layup with 3:30 to play in the second quarter, which made it 26-19.
Portland went on a 12-0 run to close the half and seize a 31-26 advantage.
CMU never regained the lead and Portland crept away, increasing its advantage to double digits several times.
Shearer hit two free throws to up Portland's lead to 61-51 with 4:34 remaining. The Chippewas never got their deficit under 10 points after that.
The Chippewas finished with a 37-31 rebounding edge but committed a season-high 29 turnovers.
