Chippewas post efficient third quarter to take over from the Panthers in defensive slugfest
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Central Michigan Women's Basketball finished calendar year 2024 on a high note with a 54-50 tally over Milwaukee Sunday afternoon.
"It feels great," Head Coach Kristin Haynie said. "We talk about protecting our home court and that's exactly what they did."
The Chippewas brought their usual defensive effort, while the Panthers packed theirs, leading to a 22-20 halftime tally. Eight CMU players found points in 20 minutes, though the high-scoring freshman Madi Morson (Canton, Mich. / Salem) only needed four points to pace her team.
Central Michigan then scored as many points in the next 10 minutes as it had the first half. Jess Lawson (Las Vegas, Nev. / Legacy) pushed through eight of her nine points, including a pair from beyond the arc. The Chippewas went 8-for-15 from the floor in the quarter.
"We just talked [at the half] about being tougher, and that's exactly what happened. We have to start the game off like that and be consistent, but I'm proud them."
Morson tallied CMU's largest lead of the game at the free throw line, 44-36, capping a 9-0 run that lasted over four minutes. Taylor Anderson (South Lyon, Mich. / East) contributed five of her nine points during the run.
Sunday's victory will last to New Year's Day 2025 when the Chippewas travel to Buffalo to open Mid-American Conference play. CMU will battle the Bulls (Jan. 1, 6 p.m.) and Ball State (Jan. 4, 1 p.m.) before returning to host Miami (OH) Jan. 8 (6:30 p.m.) to start the home slate of league action.
"We just have to continue on step at a time: continuing to sharpen up our defense, rebounding and executing on the offensive end. We did a pretty good job of taking care of the ball today, that's been our Achille's heel."
