Softball Drops Two at Hillenbrand Invitational

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Central Michigan Softball Team dropped its first two games of the Hillenbrand Invitational hosted by Arizona University. With the two losses, the Chippewas fall to 1-6 on the season. The two games CMU lost were to Indiana, 8-0 in five innings and then Drake 5-4 in eight innings.
Central Michigan will play three more games in Tucson before heading to Florida for two more final preseason tournaments.
GAME 1
Senior pitcher Grace Lehto started in the circle for the Chippewas to face the Hoosiers. Lehto faced 13 batters over two innings allowing five hits and five runs. None of the five runs scored by the Hoosiers were earned runs.
Lehto and the Chippewas faced just four batters in the first inning, where Lehto recorded her only strikeout while surrendering one base hit. The second inning is where the Chippewas faced mistakes.
In the second inning, Indiana recorded five runs, on four hits and two erros. Those five runs would be it until the fifth, when they scored the final three runs for the 8-0 run-rule victory over the Chippewas.
Cierra Laska threw 1.1 innings, faced 8 batters, gave up only one hit. Mackenzie Langan also made an appearance, her second of her career, where she threw 1 inning, allowing two hits and the final three runs.
Sophie Kleinman for Indiana recorded a no-hitter in the win.
GAME 2
A hard-fought battle for CMU ended with their first extra-innings loss of the 2024 season. Central Michigan lost in the eighth inning to Drake after each having a shot with the international tie breaker rule that was in place.
The first inning was where the Chippewas struck first. Bryn Elsenpeter drew a walk and recorded her first RBI of the season. Keria Tolmie crossed the plate for the first run, she reached on a fielder's choice. Skylar Coberley and Angela Petrovitch – who entered as a pinch runner, both scored in that inning as well when Michaleigh Vallimont doubled through the left side.
In the second inning, Carly Sleeman hit her fourth double of the season and Abbey Tolmie scored to make it 4-0, Chippewas.
That would be all that CMU scored in the game.
Drake scored one run an inning in the final five innings for their comeback victory in extra innings.
Madelyn Wallace took the start for CMU and threw 3.1 innings. Wallace faced 17 batters and allowed only one run on three hits. Brooklyn Compau entered in relief in the top of the fourth where she would throw 2.1 innings allowing three runs on three hits. Grace Lehto came in to finish the game facing the final seven outs across nine batters.
WHAT COMES NEXT
Central Michigan will take on Drake again on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. (ET) then wiill play Marshall at 3 p.m (ET). The Chippewas will close out the trip when they face No. 23 Arizona at 1:30 p.m. (ET) on Sunday.
