Chippewas entertain 10th-ranked Michigan on Sunday (2 p.m.) in their dual finale
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Several close matches that, if they go the Chippewas' way, it's a different outcome.
But they didn't, and that's wrestling.
Michigan State reeled off five straight wins and won six matches on the night on Friday in downing Central Michigan, 18-13, in a nonconference dual meet at the Spartans' Jenison Field House.
The loss ended CMU's dual meet win streak at five. The Chippewas are 8-7 and entertain No. 10 Michigan in their final dual meet of the season on Sunday (2 p.m.) at McGuirk Arena.
MSU snapped a three-meet losing streak, improving to 10-6.
"We're trying to get out guys ready for the MAC Tournament and you've got to wrestle good competition to figure out what you need to work on, what you need to change to be successful and get to the national tournament," said CMU coach Tom Borrelli, whose team will wrestle in the Mid-American Conference Championships on March 8-9 at Kent State.
The Chippewas got a 5-1 win from Sean Spidle to open the dual at 125 pounds and then got a 14-6 major decision win from Vince Perez at 133 in seizing a 7-0 lead.
The Spartans won at 141 to cut it to 7-3, and then CMU's Corbyn Munson took an 8-2 win at 149 to increase the lead to 10-3.
But things began to turn in Michigan State's favor when they won the next five matches. The first three of those victories came by three points or less, beginning at 157 where 20th-ranked Chase Saldate downed 25th-ranked Johnny Lovett, 9-7, after Lovett had built an early 6-0 lead.
At 165, MSU senior Caleb Fish, who is ranked ninth, posted a thrilling 6-5 win over redshirt sophomore Tyler Swiderski. Swiderski tied the match, 5-5, with a reversal early in the third period, but Fish notched the winning point with an escape with just over a minute remaining.
The Spartans then got another close win at 174 when senior DJ Shannon scored an 8-5 victory over redshirt sophomore Chandler Amaker. That result put the Spartans in front, 12-10, and they then won the next two matches in relatively decisive fashion to pull away.
CMU's Bryan Caves (285) won the final match of the night, getting a riding-time point to secure a 5-4 victory.
"You've got to figure out how to win the tight matches in a dual meet," Borrelli said. "If you win the tight matches, it's the same score but in our favor."
Two Chippewa starters, Munson and Swiderski, returned to the lineup after sitting out a pair of MAC dual meet wins at Kent State and Clarion last weekend with injuries. CMU was still without senior Alex Cramer, their starter 174.
The return of the 12th-ranked Munson, who improved to 23-4 by winning his ninth straight, was particularly encouraging. He controlled his match from the jump, getting two first-period takedowns.
"It was good for him to get on the mat," Borrelli said. "Sometimes when you've been out for a couple of weeks your conditioning's not quite there, you're not used to that feeling and you get that feeling for the first time in a while … it was good for him to get that out of his system before the MAC Tournament."
