Chippewas finish 9th as a team; Eastern Michigan wins women's title
YPSILANTI, Mich. — A strong ending to a great indoor season for Central Michigan.
Chippewa Track and Field wrapped up the 2024 Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships on Saturday at Eastern Michigan, with Anya Turner and Peyton Korytkowski both winning a bronze medal in their respective events.
Turner placed 3rd in the mile with a finish of 4:53.60, and finished 4th in the 800m later in the day. Korytkowski finished 3rd in the 60m hurdles in a personal-best time of 8.65 seconds.
"We had a lot of great performances this weekend," said Director of Cross Country/Track and Field Jenny Swieton. "It was fun to see everyone compete and give all that they have, and we're so excited to see what they can do in outdoor season."
"I am super impressed with Peyton's hurdle race, she came into the final ranked 7th, and then to finish 3rd was awesome. Anya and Emily had an amazing doubles, too; it's hard to score on tired legs and they got it done."
As a team, the Chippewas finished 9th. Eastern Michigan won the title with a score of 144.50.
Natalie Newcombe, Payton Sabourin, Ericka Bigham and Emily Paupore rounded out the individual track events for CMU. Newcombe finished 4th in the mile and 19th in the 3000m. Sabourin was 6th in the 400m, while Bigham finished 8th in the 800m.
Paupore, who won the 5000m on Friday, finished 6th in the 3000m.
The CMU relay team of Korytkowski, Sabourin, Bigham and Emma Fountain won their section of the 4x400 and was good for 7th overall.
Emily McLean made a mark of 12.95m in the shot put, finishing 11th of 20.
Angelina Horn was 9th of 19 in the triple jump.
Though the indoor season has come to a close, Chippewa Track and Field is nowhere near finished for the year. CMU opens the outdoor season in the Raleigh Relays, hosted by NC State University, starting on March 28.
