Three Chippewas return from injury, three recently-added make debut; three players score double-digits
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Central Michigan Women's Basketball fell, 93-68, in Mid-American Conference play to league-title contender Toledo Wednesday night in McGuirk Arena.
Three Chippewas scored in double-figures, led by junior Karrington Gordon (Detroit / Lincoln Park) with 15. Tiana Timpe (Stockton, Ill. / Stockton) hit 4-of-8 from long range for 12 points while Nadège Jean (Richton Park, Ill. / Rich South) finished the trio with 10 and shared the game's lead of seven rebounds with Rochelle Norris (Stafford, Va. / New Hope).
Timpe also tied a career high of four assists, leading to the Chippewas' 14 dimes on 28 made baskets, something Head Coach Kristin Haynie was quick to recognize.
"I'm proud of our assists. I feel like we're moving the ball better and we're finding the open people. We're continuing to get better, which is really good."
CMU's offense came in waves, trimming multiple considerable deficits through the first three quarters. The Chippewas fell behind 14-7 in the first but finished the first quarter at 19-18 Toledo; the Rockets held a 61-40 lead just after halftime, but CMU brought the margin to the brink of single digits, 69-59, at the start of the fourth.
The Chippewas had 12 players hit the floor for the first time this season with eight of the original 10 players that began the season on the roster logging more than seven minutes, just four days after having to forfeit a league contest at Kent State due to a lack of healthy players.
"We've unfortunately been battling injuries. We don't want a situation where we have to forfeit again. Thankfully we've had some of our injured players come back, which is good to see. We're just trying to be prepared so if we were to be set up with the injury bug again, we'll be ready to play."
Capria Brown (Danville, Ill. / Schlarman) and Madisen Wardell (Detroit / Edison) each played over 20 minutes with a combined 14 points after missing the Miami (OH) contest on Jan. 31. Desrae Kyles (Benton Harbor, Mich. / Benton Harbor) made her first appearance since Nov. 25.
All four midseason additions from fellow Central Michigan programs were on the floor at the game's conclusion. The faithful Chippewa crowd erupted in support on the game's final basket as Allison LaPoint (Royal Oak, Mich. / Shrine Catholic)—CMU Soccer's goalkeeper—finished inside with an assist credited to Alina Anderson (Rockford, Mich. / Rockford)—a defensive specialist for CMU Volleyball.
Central Michigan Women's Basketball remains in Mount Pleasant to host Louisiana Saturday (Feb. 10) for the second half of the 2023-24 MAC-Sun Belt Challenge, then will get a full week to prepare for a visit from Kent State (Feb. 17).
