14 Chippewas hit personal bests across 2 meets on Friday
BOSTON — Nothing but forward momentum for Central Michigan.
The Chippewas had yet another record day on Friday at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational and the GVSU Big Meet in Allendale, highlighted by Emily Paupore's breaking of the indoor 3000m CMU record in Boston, where she ran a shattering 9:22.66.
Anya Turner and Emily McLean also made strides in the history books, with Turner moving into the #3 all-time spot in the indoor mile with a time of 4:49.45, and McLean taking the #10 mark in the shot put with a throw of 14.05m.
Additionally, a handful of Chippewa competitors made personal-best marks and moved closer to record book standings on Friday. Chesney Wilke ran the 800m at GVSU in 2:14.95, one second off the 10th-best time, while Payton Sabourin was .07 seconds shy of the mark in 400m in Boston, finishing in 56.05.
"I am so proud of the team and how they competed today," said Director of Cross Country/Track and Field Jenny Swieton. "Putting all of the personal records and outcomes aside, they really just gave it their all."
Paupore, Turner, Sabourin Natalie Newcombe and Peyton Korytkowski competed for the Chippewas in Boston. Paupore was 50th, though 29th among attached collegiate competitors, in her record-breaking outing. Turner was 83rd in her race, also comprised of collegiate, unattached and professional competitors.
Payton Sabourin came away with 24th and a personal best in the 400m.
At GVSU, a majority of CMU competitors made new personal records.
Jaci Rife took 4th in her first collegiate 600m, as was the case for Jolie Fisher, who finished 16th. Amelia Gouin (6th) and Grace Jenkins (10th) both ran personal bests.
Wilke, Maya Guikema and Libby Munderloh all PR'd in their respective 800m races, highlighted by Wilke's time of 2:14.95 for a 16th place finish. Guikema was 24th and Munderloh, who ran in the early section, finished 10th in 2:17.41.
Jessie Gibbins and Emma Janesak represented CMU in the mile at Grand Valley; Janesak finished 38th in personal record time, Gibbins 40th.
In the 5000m, Jelena Prescott finished 3rd. Kate Jenkins was 10th, Sophie Thomas finished 12th, Annie Bennett placed 22nd and Ava Pergitone 28th. Thomas and Pergitone both ran personal bests.
"The team knows that results will come if they just compete," Swieton said. "For some, the results came today, and the others got one step closer."
The Chippewas will conclude the weekend festivities with another day in both cities on Saturday, with the Boston crew taking on the Distance Medley Relay (2 p.m.).
CMU will compete in the GVSU Big Meet- Saturday, an invitational meet separate from Friday. Heat sheets and event schedules can be found on the 2023-24 CMU Track and Field Schedule.
