CMU Seniors Elizabeth Cesarone, Hallie Hornbacher and sophomore Luciana Alvarado-Reid competed as individuals in the NCAA Gymnastics Arkansas Regional on Thursday.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — An evening to remember for Central Michigan Gymnastics.
Chippewa seniors Elizabeth Cesarone and Hallie Hornbacher concluded their careers in the Maroon and Gold on Thursday and Luciana Alvarado-Reid made a strong finish to her sophomore season at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Gymnastics Arkansas Regional at Bud Walton Arena.
Alvarado-Reid competed in the All-Around, whilst Hornbacher and Cesarone competed in the floor exercise and vault, respectively.
The trio competed in the second session of the Arkansas Regional with LSU, Minnesota, Brigham Young and Oregon State. Alvarado-Reid rotated with BYU, while Cesarone and Hornbacher performed with the Golden Gophers.
"We came in today very excited and prepared," said Head Coach Christine MacDonald.
Hornbacher and Cesarone, both in the NCAA Regional for the first time, each scored 9.825 in their respective events. Cesarone tied for 14th on vault and Hornbacher tied for 22nd on the floor exercise.
"It's truly rewarding to see Hallie and Elizabeth make such great strides in four years," said MacDonald of the two seniors. "For them to compete in regionals for the first time as seniors shows the work that they've put in year after year, it's amazing to watch them grow into composed competitors.
"They really took up space today; they were extraordinary in their performances and they really just had an outstanding day."
Alvarado-Reid also competed for the first time in the NCAA Regional for CMU. She opened the night with a score of 9.750 on bars (T22nd). The sophomore had a small setback on the balance beam, where she scored 9.250, but followed up beautifully on the floor exercise with a 9.900 to tie for 7th in the event. She finished the evening with a T-6th place finish on vault, a 9.850. She concluded the meet with an all-around score of 38.750.
"Lucy did an incredible job today coming in for the first time as an all-arounder," said MacDonald. "She was very composed whether or not her routines went as planned or if she had to make adjustments. She is a true competitor and a captivating performer; her floor and vault were incredible highlights for her today.
"I think it was an outstanding first time out for her. We're definitely looking forward to her future."
MacDonald noted that even though the rest of the team wasn't in the corral to cheer their competitors on, the teams in the session stepped up to help make the individuals' performances memorable ones.
"We really had a good time today," MacDonald said. "It's hard when you don't have your team to support you in a lot of ways, but BYU was great, as was Minnesota to our girls, it's just the community that we have."
