CMU’s senior keeper tallied 12 saves, eight in the first half, to keep the Chippewas in the hunt against the nationally ranked Longhorns; CMU falls, 2-0
AUSTIN, Texas — Senior goalkeeper Allison LaPoint (Royal Oak, Mich. / Shrine Catholic) took a monumental step forward for her career with Central Michigan Soccer Sunday afternoon as she logged 12 saves against the 14th-ranked Texas Longhorns, albeit in a 2-0 loss.
Â
The Chippewas had not seen double digits in-goal since the beginning of the 2019 season, just once in the tenure of Head Coach Jeremy Groves. LaPoint collected her 10th in the 53rd minute and became the first CMU keeper to reach 12 in a game since 2014, a total that ties for third all-time for the program.
Â
LaPoint entered the day as the sixth in program history to reach 200 career saves, sitting fifth with 206. Within Sunday's game, she:
Tied her career high for a match in the 42nd minute,
Logged the first double-digit performance for saves since 2019 in the 52nd minute,
Moved into fourth all-time for career saves at CMU in the 65th minute,
Tied for third all-time for saves in a game in the 84th minute.
Â
CMU responded well from Thursday night's one shot on-target at TCU with four of its five shots on-goal in the first half on Sunday.
Â
Jenna Little (Portage, Mich. / Portage Central) led the way with a pair between the eighth and ninth minutes to double her early season total to four after one each at Kentucky (Aug. 15) and at TCU (Aug. 29).
Â
Cece Mernatti (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Lakeview) tallied the Chippewas' first shot on-goal just 90 seconds in, Myla Stewart (Evergreen, Colo. / Evergreen) logged the fourth in the 25th minute and Ella Betzold (Essexville, Mich. / Garber) offered a last gasp attempt in the 89th minute.
Texas broke the seal via penalty kick early in the 17th minute after a several-minute delay due to injury on the field. The play the injury resulted from was reviewed during the stoppage and assessed a foul in the 18'. The Longhorns found their insurance in the 57th minute after an attempt from LaPoint's right post was initially deflected but ricocheted into the goal behind the Chippewa defense.
Chippewa Soccer returns to the CMU Soccer Complex Thursday for the first of back-to-back 1 p.m. home kickoffs, with South Dakota Thursday and Wis.-Green Bay Sunday. The Mid-American Conference schedule opens at Eastern Michigan
