Muessig logs first goal, accounts for five of six Chippewa shots on-goal; Coyotes find equalizer on early second-half rebound
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Central Michigan Soccer recorded its first tie, 1-1, Thursday afternoon against South Dakota at the CMU Soccer Complex.
Claudia Muessig (Paw Paw, Mich. / Paw Paw) notched her first goal of the season via free kick from deep in the right corner in the 28th minute, with a looping shot that crossed the face of the Coyotes' keeper to find the opposite corner of the net.
Muessig tallied five of CMU's six shots on-goal for the contest, twice alerting the USD defense from near-midfield via free kicks.
The Chippewas tallied a 13-8 advantage in shots for the match, including a 5-2 advantage on-frame in the first half.
South Dakota found its equalizer at the end of the 53rd minute with back-to-back attempts on-goal, the first of which was punched away by Allison LaPoint (Royal Oak, Mich. / Shrine Catholic), the second was scored off the rebound.
CMU retorted twice in the final three minutes, with freshmen Ella Betzold (Essexville, Mich. / Garber) and Maggie Van Wagnen (Napoleon, Mich. / Napoleon) each coming inches from the frame. Van Wagnen's 90th-minute attempt struck the bottom of the crossbar and took an unfriendly bounce back into play, into the arms of the Coyotes' keeper.
Central Michigan Soccer remains in Mount Pleasant through the weekend for a 1 p.m. Sunday kickoff against Wis.-Green Bay, the final home non-conference match of 2024. The Chippewas will visit Purdue Fort Wayne (Sept. 11) before opening the 2024 Mid-American Conference slate at Eastern Michigan (Sept. 19).
