Tremendous Effort Comes Up Short for Chippewas at Toledo, 69-67
1/10/2025 11:20:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Jakobi Heady scores a game-high 19 points, Kyler VanderJagt adds 17 points; Central Michigan falls short after tremendous effort.
TOLEDO, Ohio—Jakobi Heady (19 points) and Kyler VanderJagt (17 points) led a terrific effort by Central Michigan, but it was not enough as Toledo escaped with a 69-67 men's basketball win over the Chippewas Friday evening at John F. Savage Arena.
On the road for the second straight game, Central Michigan almost overcame a six-point deficit (68-62) in the final 1:37 and even had possession of the ball with 24 seconds to play, but missed a last second shot. Trailing by six points, Damarion Bonds hit a 3-pointer, then following Toledo's Sonny Wilson, who hit a free throw, CMU's VanderJagt hit two free throws to cut Toledo's lead down to 69-67 with 35 seconds to play. On the following possession, Toledo inbounded the ball and Bonds came up with a key steal to give CMU the ball back with 24 seconds to go. After a CMU timeout, the Chippewas ran the clock down, but VanderJagt's shot fell short of its mark at the buzzer.
Central Michigan falls to 0-3 in the MAC and 6-9 overall, while Toledo improves to 3-0 in the MAC and 9-6 overall. The Chippewas, who have opened MAC play with the most difficult first three games in the league, are back in action when they host Eastern Michigan at McGuirk Arena on Tuesday, Jan. 14. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.
Two of those three losses (Ohio and Toledo) were by two points.
Heady led the effort with a season and game-high 19 points on 7-13 shooting and 5-5 free throw shooting. VanderJagt converted 6-12 field goals and 4-4 free throws for his 17 points. Anthony Pirtchard, who fouled out with 1:38 to play, finished with 12 points and a career-best nine rebounds, while Ugnius Jarusevicius scored 11 points with six rebounds.
Four players reached double figures for Toledo led by Javan Simmons' 17 points, Sam Lewis' 15, Sonny Wilson's 11, and Bryce Ford's 10.
The hard-fought game was closely played the entire way. In the second half, Central Michigan outscored Toledo 37-35 and the Rockets had to fend off the Chippewas the entire evening.
Toledo put together its largest lead of the night, 49-40 on an Isaiah Adams jumper with 12:16 to play. A 3-point play by Seth Hubbard with 13:18 to play gave the Rockets a 5-0 run.
But the Chippewas battled back every time Toledo went on a run. CMU went on a 5-0 run when Heady scored on a magnificent take to the basket and Pritchard finished off a layup after a CMU steal to cut Toledo's lead down to 49-47 with 9:57 to go.
Later, two CMU turnovers contributed to a 6-0 Toledo run that pushed the Rockets' lead back up to eight points (64-56) with 4:11 to play. The Chippewas continued to battle and stayed within striking distance.
Toledo held a 34-30 halftime lead after a back-and-forth first half that featured five lead changes and two ties. A 6-0 Toledo run gave the Rockets a 31-28 lead with 2:29 to play, then Isaiah Adams hit a 3-pointer at the top of the key for a 34-30 lead with 1:33 left in the half.
Central Michigan got off to a great start. The Chippewas opened the game's first five minutes with a 10-2 lead following a Cayden Vasko 3-pointer, Jakobi Heady dunk, Anthony Pritchard driving layup, and Kyler VanderJagt 3-pointer. The Chippewas took their largest lead of the game (19-11) with 10:52 left in the first half on a VanderJagt drive and layup, but Toledo came back to tie the game at 21-21 on a Bryce Ford 3-pointer with 6:57 to go.
