Chippewas score bonus points in five of their seven wins
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan scored bonus points in five of its seven victories on Sunday in rolling to a 29-10 Mid-American Conference dual wrestling victory over Cleveland State at McGuirk Arena.
It was the Chippewas' third consecutive win as they improved to 4-5, 2-0 MAC. They opened the weekend with a 29-11 MAC win at home over Northern Illinois.
CMU takes a break next weekend from MAC competition when it goes to American in Washington, D.C. for the fourth annual Chippewa Challenge where it faces the Eagles, Campbell and UC Bakersfield.
The Chippewas won 15 of their 20 matches on the weekend in its victories over NIU and Cleveland State. All told, CMU scored bonus points in eight of those wins.
"Overall it was a good weekend," CMU coach Ben Bennett said. "Today we had guys fighting for bonus points when they had those opportunities and that's what you want to see. When you need to start separating yourself a little bit the next step is to start fighting for those bonus points and we had guys do that.
"We're heading in the right direction. We're not where we want to be, but there's a lot of positives. I always tell our guys, 'When you perform well, be happy with your performance, but also understand there's always things to work on, things to improve on.'
"Our ultimate goals are in March, not right now, so we can't be complacent."
The Chippewas got technical fall wins on Sunday from Mason Shrader (149 pounds), Tyler Swiderski (165) and Alex Cramer (174). CMU's Vince Perez (133) and Adrien Cramer (184) posted wins by major decision.
The Chippewas' other victories, by decision, came from Johnny Lovett (157) and Luke Cochran (197).
