Akron Outshoots Chippewas 87-71

Kyler VanderJagt leads Central Michigan with a career and game-high 20 points, Akron registers opponent season-highs against CMU for 3-pointers (18) and 3-point field goal percentage (43.9).
AKRON, Ohio—Akron converted a Central Michigan opponent season-high 18 3-pointers and used a 12-0 run early in the second half to gain control and register an 87-71 men's basketball victory over the Chippewas Tuesday evening at James A. Rhodes Arena.
With the loss, Central Michigan drops to 0-2 in the MAC and 6-8 overall, while Akron improves to 2-0 in the MAC and 9-5 overall. Next up, the Chippewas travel to Toledo for a Friday night 8 p.m. matchup on CBS Sports Network.
The smaller Zips launched 41 3-pointers out of their 65 total field goal attempts and converted an opponent season-high 43.9 percent (18-41) of those shots. The Chippewas entered the game ranked No. 31 nationally and No. 1 in the MAC in 3-point percentage defense.
Six Akron players reached double figures in scoring. Seth Wilson scored a team-high 18 points, Nate Johnson finished with 13, Shammah Scott, Tavari Johnson and Sharron Young all contributed 12 points, and Isaiah Gray added 11.
Kyler VanderJagt led Central Michigan with a career and game-high 20 points. He registered career-highs for field goals (nine) and field goal attempts (14). Jakobi Heady reached double figures for the 13th time in 14 games with 14 points and five rebounds, Ugnius Jarusevicius added 14 points (6-6 on free throws) and four rebounds, and Anthony Pritchard finished with 13 points, and a team-high five assists.
In the end, it was the 3-pointers that Akron hit that made the difference as the Zips scored 54 of their 87 points on 3-point shots.
After Central Michigan's Cayden Vasko cut Akron's lead down to three points at 44-41 with 18:47 to play, Akron went on a 12-0 run to take a 15 point lead (56-41) with 15:24 to go. Isaiah Gray started the rally with two free throws, Tavari Johnson followed with a 3-pointer, then Gray hit a 3-pointer for a 52-41 lead. Gray then followed with two free throws and a Nate Johnson layup made it 56-41 Akron.
Akron outscored Central Michigan 46-33 in the second half.
Akron led the majority of the first half and held a three-point lead (41-38) at halftime. The Zips took their largest lead at 27-20 with 7:45 to go in the first half. But Central Michigan battled back as VanderJagt hit a pull-up 3-pointer, then Heady drove in and hit a soft jumper to cut Akron's lead down to one point, 35-34 with 2:08 to go in the half. But Akron answered with back-to-back 3-pointers by Wilson to push the lead back to seven points (41-34) with 1:29 to play.
Eight Central Michigan players saw action in the game. Bryan Ndjonga, Heady, Jarusevicius, Vakso, and Pritchard made the start for the Chippewas.
