CMU takes down the RedHawks with 10-2 fourth quarter run, back-to-back clutch buckets from Morson in the final 30 seconds
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — "A win's a win, doesn't matter how you win."
Central Michigan Women's Basketball took down Miami (OH) with a lot of defense and perseverance, 47-46, in McGuirk Arena Wednesday night.
"We turned them over 21 times," Head Coach Kristin Haynie said. "We just kept defending and rebounding. I'm proud of the resilience—we didn't let our defense be affected by our lack of offense."
Breakout freshman Madi Morson (Canton, Mich. / Salem) stepped up twice in the final 30 seconds, driving through contact with 26 seconds to go, then a pull-up jumper to her right with eight seconds to go, regaining the lead from the RedHawks both times.
"She's a heck of a player. We practice special situations, different people taking the shots, so she was ready for the moment. For her to step up as a freshman, she's going to be taking a lot of those last-second shots."
Morson finished with a game-high 11 points—10 in the second half—to go with six rebounds, two assists and two steals.
With just 16 points into intermission, Coach Haynie squeezed every second of halftime to reframe the Chippewas' perspective, as the team returned to the floor with less than two minutes to go before the third quarter.
"I told them, 'if we lose this game, it's because we lost it.' We talked about coming out and dictating a little bit more overall. For us to come back out in the second half and dictate, that just says a lot about us: that we didn't give up, we just kept fighting and found a way to win."
CMU outscored Miami, 31-21, in the final 20 minutes through a 13-for-27 (.481) combined performance from the floor while forcing the RedHawks into 10 turnovers and a 32.1-percent clip from the field.
Morson and fellow freshman Ayanna-Sarai Darrington (Lexington, Ky. / Frederick Douglass) combined for 7-of-13 and 16 points in the half. Darrington finished with 10 points for her sixth double-digit performance from the bench this season.
The strong defense showed through on the perimeter and under the basket as the Chippewas recorded nine steals and four blocks while only tallying seven fouls for the game.
Demetria Prewitt (Madison, Wis. / La Follette) tallied a season-high three blocks and a steal while Morson and senior guards Lisa Tesson (Montreal, Quebec / Royal Crown) and Jess Lawson (Las Vegas, Nev. / Legacy) each tallied a pair of steals. Lawson also led the Chippewas again with nine rebounds while Tesson went 3-for-3 from the field.
