Chippewas fall in MAC-SBC Challenge matchup, 98-72, as Eagles tally overwhelming 13-of-24 mark from three-point range
STATESBORO, Ga. — Central Michigan Women's Basketball fell in its MAC-Sun Belt Challenge matchup at Georgia Southern, 98-72, to open the 2025-26 season.

Sophomore Madi Morson (Canton, Mich. / Salem) finished one point shy of her career high with 31 points on 13-of-21 (61.9 percent) from the field to mark the game high. The reigning Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year went eight-of-10 in the second half for 21 points.

"Madi did a good job of getting downhill and getting to the basket," Head Coach Kristin Haynie said. "Her mid-range game is so smooth too. She did a really good job of continuing to put pressure on the defense."

The Chippewas struggled to contain the Eagles' perimeter shooting as Georgia Southern tallied 13 made three-pointers at a rate of 54.2 percent. A performance that contradicted what scouting had suggested about the Eagles.

"We'll take some of the credit as coaches for the three-points in the beginning. Individually, they weren't the best three-point shooters and a lot of these players were new and had struggled at their old institutions."

Central Michigan shot 50 percent from the field for just the second time in Coach Haynie's tenure and was 15-of-20 from the free throw line but managed just one three-pointer of its own in seven attempts.

"The positive we have is our shooting percentage. Shooting 50 percent from the field and 75 percent from the free throw line was encouraging to see. So, when we don't turn the ball over, we can score."

Ayanna-Sarai Darrington (Lexington, Ky. / Frederick Douglass) posted nine points, six rebounds all in the fourth quarter. The sophomore played just four minutes in the first half as she dealt with foul trouble early.

Nekhu Mitchell (Baltimore, Md. / McDonogh) supplied CMU's other double-digit scoring game with 10 points on four-of-10 from the field. Taylor Anderson (South Lyon, Mich. / East) led all players with eight rebounds to go with eight points.

Central Michigan Women's Basketball returns to McGuirk Arena for its home-opener Sunday against Davenport (Nov. 9; 1 p.m. ET). The Chippewas host Eastern Illinois (Nov. 22) and Purdue (Nov. 30) later this month.
