STONY BROOK, N.Y.—Using seven first half 3-pointers and a significant rebounding margin, Stony Brook built a sizeable first half lead then coasted to a 78-55 men's basketball win over Central Michigan Saturday afternoon at Stony Brook Arena.
Central Michigan dropped to 3-7 on the year. Stony Brook improved to 8-3 overall. Central Michigan gets back to action at home on Wednesday, Dec. 17 when it hosts Olivet at McGuirk Arena (7 p.m.).
Stony Brook held a 45-18 rebounding advantage over Central Michigan. The Seahawks converted 57.1 percent of their shots and 64.7 percent (11-17) of their 3-point attempts. Andrej Shoshkikj scored a game-high 21 points on 7-9 shooting, Rob Brown III added 12 points, and Erik Pratt finished with 11 points.
On the other side, Central Michigan scored just 55 points and shot just 35.1 percent (20-57) from the floor, 13 percent (3-23) from 3-point range. The Chippewas did force the Seahawks into 20 turnovers, while turning it over only eight times. Forward Nick Mullen was the only Chippewa player to reach double figure scoring with 14 points on 5-8 shooting off the bench.
"I didn't see a lot of effort and physicality in the first half," Central Michigan head coach Andy Bronkema said. "If there's one positive of this game, we did come out of halftime and played with some physicality, got to the free throw line, got to the bonus. If you're not going to make any shots, you're not going to win any game and if you get outrebounded by nearly 30, you're not going to win any games. There is some soul-searching that we have to do."
"Right now we're playing in spurts of two minutes here, two minutes there. That's not a basketball game. We're not happy, it's not happy holidays, it's go to work, communicate what's important to us, demand that it happens. When it doesn't, coach them up. It's young men trying to figure out how to deal with it and the emotions that go with it."
"Nick played outstanding. He had two outstanding practices in a row where we left the practice and we said, he had a lot of energy and was moving around. That response was to his last game."
Stony Brook built a 44-22 halftime lead. In the first half, the host Seawolves outrebounded the Chippewas 23-8, shot 58.6 percent (17-29) on field goals and hit 7-11 3-pointers in the first half alone. Meanwhile, Central Michigan shot 37 percent (10-27) and hit just 2-12 3-pointers.
Right from the start, Stony Brook jumped out to a 13-2 lead after the game's first three minutes. After the Chippewas cut the deficit down to eight points (24-16) with 9:05 to on a 3-pointer by Rodney Johnson, Jr., the Seawolves responded with a 17-0 run to go up 41-16 at the 3:44 mark in the first half. Valentiny followed with a bucket, Brown scored two baskets and Valentiny gave the Seahawks a 25-ponit lead (41-16) at the 3:44 mark.
