Morson, Darrington finish in double figures as CMU notches strong first half, runs out of steam
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Central Michigan Women's Basketball dropped its final of a four-game stretch against power-conference opponents Sunday, 82-55, at No. 17/16 Kentucky.
Ayanna-Sarai Darrington (Lexington, Ky. / Frederick Douglass), in her own backyard, led a strong second quarter for the Chippewas with eight points in a 21-20 advantage through the period, a 45-38 Wildcat lead at the half.
Madi Morson (Canton, Mich. / Salem) led the way with 12 points, followed by Darrington's 11. Nekhu Mitchell (Baltimore, Md. / McDonogh), Zareia Chevre (St. Paul, Minn. / Simley) and Demetria Prewitt (Madison, Wis. / La Follette) all finished within a bucket of double figures.
Mitchell scored all of her seven first-half points in CMU's 11-4 run in the final three-and-a-half minutes of the second quarter, the other four supplied by Darrington. The Chippewa defense held Kentucky without a field goal during that time.
Kentucky opened each half with a tone-setting run—12-4 from the opening tip, 8-0 after intermission. Despite the strong second quarter, the Chippewas never go back to within two possessions.
Central Michigan Women's Basketball concludes its road nonconference schedule Dec. 17 (7 p.m. ET) with a visit to Valparaiso.
The Mid-American Conference slate begins inside McGuirk Arena against Northern Illinois (Dec. 20, 1 p.m. ET), followed by Ohio (Dec. 31, 1 p.m. ET) to close the 2025 calendar.
