Kyler VanderJagt sets career-highs for points (25) and 3-pointers made (six), Ugnius Jarusevicius returns to the lineup and registers fourth double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds as Central Michigan rolls to victory.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.—Kyler VanderJagt registered career-highs for scoring (25 points) and 3-pointers made (six) and Ugnius Jarusevicius returned to the lineup and notched his fourth double-double of the season with 21 points and a game-high 12 rebounds as Central Michigan rolled to a 90-71 men's basketball win over Bowling Green Saturday evening at McGuirk Arena.
The win improved to Central Michigan to 4-5 in the Mid-American Conference and 10-11 overall, while Bowling Green dropped to 2-7 in the MAC and 7-14 overall. Including this evening's game, the Chippewas will play three home games in seven days. Central Michigan hosts Miami (OH) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and then hosts Texas State in the MAC-SBC Challenge next Saturday at 5 p.m.
Central Michigan shot 56.4 percent (31-55) from the floor and 40 percent (10-25) from 3-point range. It used 60.6 percent (20-33) shooting to build a sizable 16-point halftime lead, then used a dominating 15-0 run late in the second half to seal the win. At home, Central Michigan has claimed 13 of its last 17 games, 17 of its last 21 contests and is now 6-3 this year at McGuirk Arena.
VanderJagt converted eight of 10 field goals and 6-7 3-pointers for his 25 points. Playing in his first contest in four games, Jarusevicius converted 8-15 field goals and grabbed four offensive and eight defensive for his high 12. It marked his fourth double figure rebounding game and third 20-point scoring game of the year. Jarusevicius returned to the lineup for the first time in four games after being sidelined with an injury.
"When Oogie is on the floor, he is hard to handle and hard for our opponents to deal with," Central Michigan head coach Tony Barbee said. "He draws a lot of attention. It makes the game easy on everybody else when we take advantage of him in the paint. He's skilled, he shoots free throws, he can finish with his right and left hand. When teams have to corral and double Oogie, guys like Kyler and guys like Cayden can get loose and make threes. It makes it easy for our team."
After a back-and-forth first 10 minutes, Central Michigan took the lead for the rest of the half and built a commanding 49-33 halftime lead while shooting 60 percent from the floor. CMU used an 8-0 run to take a 20-12 lead at the 11:28 mark. Cayden Vasko drained a 3-pointer for a 17-12 lead with 12:42 left in the first half, then Quentin Heady finished off a 3-ponit play. The Chippewas pushed their lead back to eight points at 23-15 on a 3-pointer by Kyler VanderJagt.
Later, VanderJagt hit another 3-pointer to give CMU a 34-26 lead with 6:12 to play in the first half. A pullup jumper by VanderJagt gave the Chippewas a 36-26 lead at the 4:38 mark.
Then CMU used a 9-0 run to take its largest lead of the game, 45-28. A 3-pointer by Vasko, two driving layups by Pritchard and layup by Jarusevicius put CMU up 15 points with 2:06 to go before halftime.
Trailing 57-43, Bowling Green used an 8-0 run to trim Central Michigan's lead down to six points at 57-51 with 12:57 to play. DaJion Humphrey started the rally with a 3-pointer, Marcus Johnson followed with a 3-pointer, then Braelon Green scored on a layup. But the Chippewas responded with a Jarusevicius 3-pointer and 3-pointer by VanderJagt to push the margin back up to 10 points.
"That lapse that allowed them to go on a run was a little bit of our malfunction, especially on the offensive side of the floor," Barbee said. "We want to take 3-pointers but you don't come out of halftime with a 16-point lead and start launching threes. They didn't go in. We got back to our game plan of attacking that point off the drive, off the post. When we did that, we got easy baskets, got to the foul line and created easy baskets for our team."
Central Michigan pushed the lead back up to 78-55 with 5:28 to play as it used a 15-0 run fueled by two VandJagt 3-pointers and two Jakobi Heady free throws. Pritchard added a layup, Jarusevicus scored on a jumper, VanderJagt completed a layup and Jarusevicius hit a free throw for the 78-55 lead.
Bowling Green was led by Javontae Campbell, who finished with 17 points and Trey Thomas, who added 15. Pritchard also added 15 points and a game-high eight assists for Central Michigan and Vasko finished with 11 points for the hosts.
The Chippewas started Anthony Pritchard, Bryan Ndjonga, Cayden Vasko, Ugnius Jarusevicius and Shaedon Simpson. Simpson made the first start of his career.
