Morson posts third straight 20-point game, Lawson marks first 20-point game as a Chippewa in her fifth double-double; foul trouble slows CMU down late
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — "Even when we aren't getting stops on defense, we can't let that affect our offense."
A strong offensive performance for the usually defensive-minded Chippewas ran dry in the fourth quarter Saturday as CMU fell to Bowling Green, 76-69.
Freshman Madi Morson (Canton, Mich. / Salem) led the way with her third straight 20-point outing (23 points), the most consecutively by a CMU freshman since Feb. 1, 2020. Morson's 20-point efforts have come from a combined 31-for-57 from the field, shooting at or over 50 percent in all three.
"She's doing a good job being efficient too as of late, taking shots within the offense," Head Coach Kristin Haynie said. "Her three ball is starting to come too. Continuing to build offensive consistency and production as a team will be great."
An explosive 17-point, 18-rebound effort Wednesday night at Northern Illinois spilled over Saturday for senior guard Jess Lawson (Las Vegas, Nev. / Legacy) as she posted her first 20-point game as a Chippewa to go with 11 rebounds for her fifth double-double this season.
The duo combined for 19 points in the first quarter, on 7-of-8 shooting while the Chippewas gave the ball away only three times—five times in the first half.
Offense slowed at both ends in the second quarter as CMU opened the quarter 3-for-12 from the field. The Chippewas responded with a 10-4 run to the end the half with a double-digit lead, first marked by Demetria Prewitt (Madison, Wis. / La Follette) with two of CMU's 18 second-chance points on the day.
"Whatever she needs to do, she's going to do it. She's tough, she's physical, she's just undersized. She did a good job and gave us a spark when we put her at the five."
Prewitt stepped up for the Chippewas in extended absences of freshman starting center Ayanna-Sarai Darrington (Lexington, Ky. / Frederick Douglass) who dealt with foul trouble throughout the contest. Darrington had broken in as an integral part of the Chippewas' rotation as of late, scoring double figures in seven of the last eight games, twice hitting 19.
CMU marked its biggest lead, 46-34, as Lawson got within two points of her 20-point outing at the free throw line. The first of two key second half runs by Bowling Green ensued—a 14-3 stretch over four minutes—to draw the game back to one point, 49-48.
Morson poured in eight points in a 10-4 retort by the Chippewas, hitting a pair of her three-pointers during the run. The Falcons answered again with a 14-4 run into the final media break as Darrington had four fouls, Morson and Lawson with three, early in that stretch.
"We were in foul trouble early. [Bowling Green] shooting 36 free throws … that's the game right there."
The Chippewas were called for 28 fouls in Saturday's loss, 18 in the second half. Bowling Green shot 12 more free throws (19-of-24) than CMU (8-of-12).
Morson put the Chippewas back in the lead one final time, 67-66, with just over two minutes to go, but the Falcons scraped together a 10-2 run to finish the second half comeback.
