Alvarado-Reid earns fifth all-around title; Chippewas stay undefeated in MAC
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — A sweet win on Valentine's Day.
Central Michigan Gymnastics continued its Mid-American Conference victory streak on Friday night as the Chippewas defeated Eastern Michigan, 195.650-194.150 in McGuirk Arena.
CMU, undefeated in league standings at 3-0, is now 8-1 overall.
"We took it one routine at a time and something that we've been talking about is, taking it one competition at a time," said Head Coach Christine MacDonald. "We felt really good about coming in today and have a great mindset about where we're at."
Hannah Appleget had a standout evening for CMU with two event wins, igniting the Chippewas on their two best events of the evening.
The senior won the uneven bars and the floor exercise with scores of 9.850 and 9.875, respectively.
CMU scored 49.050 as a squad on uneven bars and 49.125 on floor, winning both events over the Eagles.
"(Hannah) really has blended well," MacDonald said of the Lindenwood transfer. "We've talked about it early on (in the season), but she definitely sees the success from practice.
"She feels the same at the meet as she does in the practice gym, and that's something she's really taken ownership of and thriving in. You can see it in her face and her performance as she continues to compete, one routine after another."
Luciana Alvarado-Reid tabbed her fifth all-around title of the year, totaling 39.125 across four events. She won the vault with a score of 9.775, helping the Chippewas to a 48.600 team win on the event.
Alongside Appleget and Alvarado-Reid, the Chippewas combined for eight more podium finishes.
Sophomore Samantha Shannon finished tied for second on the vault and tied for third on the uneven bars with scores of 9.725 and 9.800, respectively.
Shannon shared both ties with her teammates, with freshman Ava Wellmeier on vault and Alvarado-Reid on the uneven bars.
Sophomore Gabrielle Johnson placed 2nd on bars with a score of 9.825, while senior Quinn Skrupa finished 3rd on the balance beam with a score of 9.825.
Freshman Zoe Zimmerman and senior Avah Bootz rounded out the Chippewas' podium finishes on the floor exercise, sharing third with a pair of 9.825s.
CMU is now through four meets through its five meet home slate, taking full advantage of the cheers of the crowd in McGuirk Arena to stay undefeated at home. CMU hosts its senior night during the regular season finale against Northern Illinois on March 14.
"(The team) loves to compete, but more importantly, they love to compete at home in front of their family and friends," MacDonald said. "It really is special for them, McGuirk is a great arena with a great environment, and we love to compete for our community and fans.
Now well into the Mid-American Conference season, the Chippewas have an opportunity to rest before taking the battle to an also-undefeated Kent State on Feb. 23. The Golden Flashes are set to compete at nonleague opponent Rutgers on Feb. 15 (5 p.m.).
