Chippewas cede two key Falcon runs in the first half; Darrington logs third straight double-double
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — Central Michigan Women's Basketball dropped a 70-55 result at Bowling Green on Saturday in its return to league play from last weekend's MAC-SBC Challenge.
Jess Lawson (Las Vegas, Nev. / Legacy) led the Chippewas with 13 points while Ayanna-Sarai Darrington (Lexington, Ky. / Frederick Douglass) posted her third straight double-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds adding a pair of blocks and a pair of steals in 26 minutes of action.
The Falcons posted a 7-0 run after a 4-4 defensive stalemate lasted to the first quarter media break and were up 13, 21-8, by the end of the period. A 14-0 run to end the half pushed the Chippewas into a 20-point deficit.
CMU opened the second quarter with an 11-2 stretch over a four-minute window to get back within six. Lawson and Darrington did the bulk of the damage, scoring nine combined points during the run.
The offensive struggle proved to be a team-wide epidemic as Lawson and freshman standout Madi Morson (Canton, Mich. / Salem) combined for 3-for-16 from the field, while the team tallied 12 first-half giveaways.
Central Michigan faced its largest deficit midway through the third, 51-27, but had chipped eight points from the margin by the end of the quarter. Darrington scored all of her five third-quarter points during that time.
The Chippewas drew back in to within 14 points early in the fourth as Darrington and Taylor Anderson (South Lyon, Mich. / East) each collected an offensive rebound before Anderson cashed in the second chance points, 58-44.
A Mayla Ham (Detroit, Mich. / Wayne Memorial) three-pointer with 2:16 to play brought CMU as close as 11 points, 64-53, forcing Bowling Green into a timeout to settled itself down for the final two minutes.
Central Michigan Women's Basketball heads to Ypsilanti, Mich. for Eastern Michigan Wednesday night (Feb. 19, 6:30 p.m. ET) before returning to McGuirk Arena for arch-rival Western Michigan (Feb. 22).
